antelope hair treatments

I saw a recent post about antelope hair. I was wondering if anyone knows of some treatment or method that will make the hair more resistant to cutting. I use Danville flat nylon which reduces the the cutting but especially when I pack the hair it starts to cut.

Hi dfly…that’s the “tradeoff” of using antelope over deer or elk…it spins easier but is more fragile. What kind of packer are you using? I found that the Brassie style did less damage. Also, the hair will slide alot easier on a bare hookshank. I don’t know of any treatment for the hair to strengthen it. Hope this helps…Jason

Less thread pressure?

Look for a flat thread (Monocord)for tying, when using fragile hair such as antelope or caribou.

You may want to try some other methods of tying, such as saturating the the dressing thread (layer of thread 1st laid to cover the hook shank) with some slow drying adhesive, so you can use less tension, when spinning. Also you can coat the tread that you are spinning with, by using saturated rag, to apply some of the adhesive to the tying thread while spinning. This way you have adhesive securing on the top and bottom of the spun hair.

Here is an article that covers all aspect of choosing what type of thread is best for the tying task, “Tying Tip”[url=http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/tyingtips/part211.html:c7090]Thread![/url:c7090] ~Parnelli

Try a Griffin packer. Works better than anything else I’ve tried.
