Al Troth married the body of a Henry’s Fork Hopper with the wing from his Elk Hair Caddis, added some biot legs and came up with a neat little hopper (could also pass for a Yellow Sally in these colors, I guess). For whatever reason don’t think it ever caught on like the HF or Letort Hopper when it came out, but it’s still a cool bug. Simple to tie, floats well and fish eat it. Works especially well for me in the smaller sizes #12-16; change colors as you see fit, tan and olive have also been very effective.

hook - Dai Riki 320 #12
thread - UTC 70 hopper yellow
body - deer hair yellow
underwing - landscape fabric
legs - goose biots red
overwing - deer or elk hair

Part 1

mash barb and attach thread 1 hook eye width back, wrap to bend and back

clean and stack a clump of deer hair, trim tips

a couple soft loops to tie in by tips

wrap back to hook bend

pull deer hair forward, surrounding hook shank

create 1st body segment

repeat

Part 2

and so on (brush a little Sally on the wraps)

trim underwing (hook gap width)

apply a drop of Crazy Glue and tie in underwing (extend a bit beyond hook bend)

tie in biot on near side (body length)

and far

clean and stack some hair (elk used here) for wing and tie in (tips extend to underwing)

trim body & wing hair, half hitch x2, SHHAN and you’re done

What kind of deer hair did you use for the body?

Generic bleached/dyed deer hair; don’t think it’s belly (too fine). I’ve had the stuff a long time and it’s not in the original bag so I don’t know for sure.
