Allen & Co. Fly Line

A couple weeks ago I came across their fly lines and started talking to the owner and decided to give it a try. I received it very fast. I got the WFF 4wt in green. The first thing i noticed was the loop, it was fully coated and smooth. After i put it on a spare reel that i had lying around i put it on my rod and headed outside. It was surprisingly smooth and cast like a rocket! Next i cast it into the pool more than a few times and it floated every well, i haven’t had it on moving water yet but i don’t think it will be an issue. Over about a week i had 7 different people over (from new fly fishers to people that have been ff for over 20 years) to look it over and cast it, they all felt the same way i did, it was great and cast smooth and far (cast well with minimal line out as well) and floated very well. Not one person had a bad thing to say about it… It is very reasonably priced too, its just under ten bucks. The owner is very friendly and helpful too, he answered all of my questions very fast. To say the least this will be my main line for sure. In no way am i affiliated with this company, just a very satisfied customer that would like to pass on a few words about a great and affordable product.

I spooled up with the WFF-5 (green) and WFF-6 (yellow) lines from Allen & Co. I haven’t had a chance to cast them yet, but initial impression is very good. I had gotten a cheap fly line that came with a Cabela’s combo I bought for my son to learn with. I didn’t like that line at all, whatever it is…it seemed sort of stiff or brittle.

But the Allen flylines have a much better feel. They feel similar to the mid-price-range lines I usually buy. I can’t compare these to expensive lines, because I don’t currently own any.

Going from memory, these lines are 85’ long…with a 6" tip, 6’ front taper, 28’ body, followed by the rear taper and running line. I may not have that exactly right (no photographic memory here, apparently), but it seemed like the Head Length numbers were similar to RIO Classic.

I’m looking forward to trying these out this coming season. Its tough to wait for all this ice to go away!

Any of you have a comparison between this line and Cabelas Prestige Plus line?

That is my current favorite line. It doesn’t take on ‘memory’ and remains supple in cold weather and doesn’t ‘wilt’ in hot weather.

Just under $10? Wow! You can’t get a bad level line from a big box store for that. I too like the Cabelas Prestige plus but might have to pick up a line or 2 to compare them side by side!

I’ve used Cabela’s Prestige Plus for a couple years now on my favorite fly rod. No complaints about that line whatsoever.

All I can go on right now is the “feel” of the line, since I can’t get out to cast it yet. I’ll have to put a full season the these new lines to determine how they work in both warm and cold temps.

For the price, I wasn’t expecting much. But seeing and feeling the lines on my reels now…they’ve already exceeded my expectations!

I have two buddies that use Cabelas Prestige Plus line, they also were some of the ones to cast the Allen & Co. and they loved it. They felt that they were able to cast a little further and pick up more line when casting instead of stripping in line before starting their cast. We noticed it shot farther too.

I wonder who makes their fly line for them? At that price you would think it has to be offshore or they are buying someone’s blemished line.

That’s a good question i have no idea where they are made?
