Let us know how it works out for you. I am thinking of tying some up too.
what a great way to suspend the fly body, and I bet my littlest one will love tying Alien flies!
thanks Richard

that looks like an awesome trout fly! I’ll try it at my local creek in quebec. It will also work miracles for gills
tight lines, and taught thread
I’m having a hard time finding that type of foam. Does anyone know of a good place to buy it other then a flyshop? It kind of looks like window insulation type stuff. Would a hardware store have this stuff or how about a crafts store? Thats a really cool looking fly! Thanks guys!
Hello Tim,
Thank you for taking the time to look at the Alien. You can get the Float Foam at:
Bob Marriott’s, http://www.bobmarriotts.com/[/url:8ec38]
Or go to Rainy’s web page and do a search for dealers near you:

I’ve heard there is round window insulation you can find at hardware stores.
And finally, you can also use Live Body Foam (which I use in the Texas BullFrog) from:
Hunters Angling Supplies www.huntersangling.com[/url:8ec38]
Good Luck, and let us know how you do with the Alien.
Cheers,

Tim,
Here’s a cross-post link on the Alien from the FAOL Fly Tying Forum:

I drill different size foam cores using different diameter tubes or plug cutters. Sort of like this:

If you don’t want to do to all this, it would probably be better to buy it.

Oh that would work! I’ve got a bunch of foam cylinders I could punch out. I’ll have to give it a shot. Thanks!
I looked for rainy’s foam at Bass pro just last night. No luck, but they do have soft foam cylinders for poppers. Is there a difference between Rainy’s foam and soft “flip-flop” foam?

just noticed your address on your post. we will be going to visit our kids in frisco the first week in may. any spots you could suggest in which to wet a line would be greatly appreciated.
thanks much

Swamp Rat,
Not according to Richard.
True, any foam will work when it is cut in that shape.
Closed cell foam like flip flops should work fine but I would stay away from the open cell foam that’s water absorbent unless you want a subsurface fly.

Hello Robert,
True. Any closed cell foam cut to that shape will work. The XL Rainy’s Float Foam is sufficient up to size 2.
Beyond that, I like Live Body Foam from Hunters Angling. This week I will be making a 2/0 Alien to throw with my 8 wt. Might add a size 2 Alien as a dropper .
Will use the Live Body Foam myself since I do not have access to flip-flop foam.
Any closed cell foam will work. DO NOT use open-cell foam which will absorb water.
Enjoy the Alien.
Cheers,
Richard

Hey Richard,
Wow! A 2/0 with a #2 dropper! I tied three so far in size 8 (used small 3/16" diameter foam core plugs) to try out on bream. Like I said earlier, I don’t have any black cactus (ice) chenille right now so for the time being, I’ve just used some real fuzzy (large) black chenille until I get some . Tested them in the sink for floatability and they float and look great. Its a good looking surface cricket pattern (well, hopefully to the fish anyway) and fairly easy to tie. Thanks for sharing it.
