Ckeck out the many patterns on the Anchorage FFF club fly of the week.
WF, Thanks, great suggestion and reference.
i have no experience with alaska,
but i will try to suggest some flies anyway based on what i have heard.
bunny leeches
GLO-BUGS!
egg sucking leeches
mice patterns(for the rainbows)
flesh fly(depending on time)
bunny leaches, glo bugs, egg sucking leaches, cotton candy, spey’s, jock scotts, thunder and lightning, silver docter, stuff like that
When I used to live up there, fall fishing would be Dolly Llamas, egg patterns (downsize from summer eggs), rabbit leeches, egg sucking leeches, and marabou flies. There are some great stores in Anchorage and Wasilla that will help you out and tell you what’s hot that week. Have fun!!
The fish (doesn’t matter what species) will always be taking a good presentation.
Ask your outfitter what the local favorites are, and always bring your old stand by’s.
It seems, from my experience in NY and from stories, that silvers LOVE (read HATE) pink, so they strike hard at pink colors in rivers. Rainbows just need to be in the mood when a fly passes by, and I don’t have the slightest idea for the char. If they are anything like the local brookies, if it floats by it’s food.
Good luck and enjoy Alaska.
Dblhaul,
I just got back from Alaska, all the flies I tied were not heavy enoug and had to add spit shot, along with my sinking leader. The flies drifted over the fish if it wasn’t weighted enough and it would be ignored. Even the spin fishermen had to add weight,
Hot Pink worked the best, I caught some on the Chili pepper, but I forgot to bring the number 4s along.
The egg pattern worked on the Dollies.
Bob.
