Al Campbell's SHWAPF

I miss Al Campbell, would enjoy talking with him.

Any of you had success using his SHWAPF patterns? SHWAPF stands for "Swept Hackle, Wingless, All Purpose Fly.

If you do a search in Yahoo, you will see that the SHWAPF has had some exposure as articles, especially on this site.

Be interested knowing what your experience has been with Al’s pattern?

I tyed up a bunch and gave them to my dad. After he had succuess I strted using them with alot of success also. I Learned to tye using Al’s instructions.

I too have had success with them in orange with red fox squirrel and muskrat dub and badger guard hairs.

I’ve had luck using them. It is not my go to fly, but when I want to experiment with new or different fly’s I tied one on ( tyed per
Al’s instructions) and had a quite respectable catch of sunfish.

I’m fortunate enough to have a SHWAPF tied by Al. It will never get wet. That’s not to say the one’s tied by me won’t. It’s one of those “Does Everything” flies.

SHWAPF are great in my opinion. I was guiding a man and his son a few weeks back when a fantastic caddis hatch came off with the fish going nuts over the bugs. The father was dead set on fishing an EHC while I switched his son to a caddis syle SHWAPF. Well guess who caught fish? I can’t begin to tell you how many fish I’ve caught on this fly. I’ve also been tying an Arkansas Red @ss style SHWAPF with red tinsle for the underbody and badger guard hair for the swept hackle. It sure beats tying with partridge. It’s a great fly with endless combinations. I too have one of Al’s fly’s that will also never get wet, but every time I catch a fish with one of my SHWAPFs I think about Al and smile.

This is very weird. I just got home from tying some SHWAPFs with Al over at his house. He tied up the first few (which are the first flies he’d tied since Idaho), then I got to tie about 8 or 9.
As he said (more than once), “It’s OK if it’s not perfect. The fish won’t mind, and you’ll still catch a few”.
I plan to use these with Al next week if the weather holds.

I tie flies to give the fish something to laugh about.

I caught many a Brook Trout and also young Salmon on this fly. Last summer was my first season fishing the SHWAPF and it was probably my most productive fly.
here’s one I tied, hope Al likes it.
