afternoon on the creek

OK… went out to the local creek for about and hour to practice my new long rod. Keep in mind this is only my second time out. I walk out on some rocks below the dam and I’m standing there casting like I know what I’m doing… I’m wearing sandals… suddenly I feel something on my left foot. I look down and a 2 foot snake is crawling over the top of my foot… man… I’m glad no one was around cuz I squealed like a little school girl… after I regained my composure I continued to fish away… Paid off. Caught my first fish on the fly rod… a nice hand sized bream (using a Sneaky Pete). Thanks Mikey (Ohiotuber) I was thrilled… I will be getting some wading boots before my next trip!!!

Congratulations on your first fish on the fly, your officialy hooked on fly fishing. What is a sneaky pete? Never heard of that type of fly. Is there somewhere I can see pics of it?

Thanks,
Nick

Ron,
Fantastic!..Gotta love ol’ sneaky petes. They really are versatile as far as how you can fish them. There are many other super flies out there as well. Now you are hopelessly hooked!
I had to laugh at your snake story…I had that happen once in Iowa, at night after our “wet wood” fire died out.

You can call me Mike & you can call me Mikey…Just remember that this site’s about sharing!

Congrats on your first fish…and you gotta watch those sneaky snakes…

Sneaky Snake is a good discription. Small in size - big in attitude. Most snakes avoid humans, but I encountered two yesterday that were not afraid of me. The little one was Reddish Brown with dark Brown rings. I’m almost positive he was a Moccasin. Like I said… I’ll get some boots before I go again. Oh yeah… I’m a Sneaky Pete fan now!
** But heres my chance to let you guys in on a website of a guy in GA that ties foam poppers (they don’t scratch and chip) local Fly Anglers sware by his flies. [url=http://www.dppoppers.com:01bf3]http://www.dppoppers.com[/url:01bf3]
Guys love his Original DP Popper and his Stealth Bomber. Check out the website. He’s in LaGrange, GA.

this was a red letter day, all topwater and 75% bass. Movement was necessary to get the hit.

Hi FF. The Sneaky Pete is a real nice topwater. I caught a very nice smallie with one over the weekend, and the rockbass really went for it as well. As far as the snakes go, well, I’m with you. It is one of the main reasons I wear waders and boots. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I have almost steped on one, and once 4 when they were having a mini confab at the waters edge. They never cease to startle me, are terrific hunters, and generally really nasty in disposition. Geez, now that I think of it it kinda sounds like people at work! LOL
Good Fishing!
Bob

If that was a moccasin, you’re lucky you didn’t get bit. They’re very territorial and very aggressive. They’re permanently in bad moods, will bite because you’re in their turf then bite again because you didn’t leave soon enough after the first bite.

I had to work around them my first summer break during college. I went to summer school from then on.
