Actually, I meant how many active users would be necessary. I guess I was thinking along the lines of how many people an advertiser would need to see. I know that some u-tube content pays a small amount for each hit.

ok a couple things..
you have to have an org setup. An LLC or something so revenue does not go into a personal account.
so LLC and Checking account
Frame ads as sponsorship
target goal at 200/mo but this is a board decision. Also does the board get paid?
…
CPM (Cost Per Mille)
= the cost to show an ad 1,000 times
That is the sponsor guarantee minimum. Assume you charge 40.00 per month .. You need 5 advertisers to get 200.00
If the board wants to say an ad view is worth a penny assuming minimal traffic if we target minimal only not each view…
we are promising 40.00 = #views × .01 (a penny)
…
that equates to .01 × 1000 = $10.00 CPM
Typical Facebook Ad Costs (2026 benchmarks)
Cost per 1,000 views (CPM)
Typical: $8 – $14 CPM
Social Cubicle
Broader range: $5 – $20 CPM
WebFX
U.S. often higher: $15 – $25+ CPM
Adamigo +1
or 4000 views to support $40.00
…
You need 5 sponsors at $40 for your goal.. so 20000 ad views in a month
We show ads to non logged in visitors only
Assume 25 days in a month to cover Feb and outages?
so 800 visitors a day
we are at about 300 a day now
That of course does not factor in if the sponsor expects a minimum # clicks into their site
I have not looked at ad metrics built into discourse yet. That was a fall project.
there are none for simple house ads.
but that is putting the cart in front of the horse.
i lowballed numbers but we need to get activity up by maybe 25% to cover base costs
That is doable if we can attract sponsors.
Fewer if it stays where it is now. But if I get hit by a bus… The board needs a plan.
And yes the bus driver’s name is Norm. I know you were thinking it.
Norm has always been odd. He has left before, though not asked to be deleted.
We all get a little more rigid as we age. Whatever triggered him was valid to him.
I wish this could have played out differently though.
But it at least brought the need to get oversight and more involvement to the forefront.
