Alcohol is my first choice in solvents, If it won’t clean it up then I try somthing else(like reading the directions) I use the industrial version from the paint shop.
Isn’t acetone used for removing nail polish? I just know the stuff does have an unpleasant odor. If you want a good buzz, try some xylene. hat stuff will cut just about any coating. We use it to remove contact cement when making laminate counter tops. Definitely need lots of ventilation with all of these chemicals, plus the appropriate safety gear.
Vinegar will clean up epoxy, not nearly as nasty as the acetone and it’s not even flammable like the alcohol…I bet you already have some in the kitchen cubard.
You might want to look up (MSDS’s) on the chemical(s) you’re using, to find out what long-term effects are, for contact and vapors. Some of that stuff is nasteee. Old guys like me can ignore this. We’re not going to have any more babies anyway, and we already have one foot in the grave. 'course if you want to live longer…
Acetone is A) highly volatile; B) highly flammable; and C) a carcinogen. Works great for taking magic marker or sharpie off of a dry erase board, tho. And it is a great solvent for lots of other things.
Along the same lines, I watched an old timer clean up his computer screen with MEK once. Don’t try that at home.
Made that screen go funny in all kinds of different ways.
Wow! Xylene is great for thinning “Goop” and making your own flexament… Acetone is good for “ungluing” your fingers when playing with super-glue… MEK is good for taking paint off of almost anything… They all affect (melt, soften, dissolve) plastics in various ways.
All of these solvents are rough characters and won’t do your long-term health any good. You have to use them carefully – and if you don’t know how to use them or what they’ll do, DON’T play with them!
Toluene is what the last “T” in TNT stands for. It would be a good idea to be careful with it.
When I worked for a well drilling company here, we had a big job at a TNT plant in Chattanooga, drilling environmental test wells. The water under the ground was saturated with toluene and had a sweet smell to it. Of course we had to take the necessary precautions when we drilled down to it. No one was hurt that I know of, but then again, they made us wear rubber gloves, safety glasses and one of those white suits that nothing penetrates. It was fun…
