8-10 weight reel ?

Ok, Been looking at reels and am interested in the Orvis Mach Series! Anybody have any suggestions?

I just bought a MidArbor reel and looked at the LA Mach reels. Both look like very nice reels. I like the Mid Arbor better because the LA felt like my hand had to travel in larger loops than I am accustomed to and it felt awkward on a long retrieve.

the mach is a nice reel. buy it now and you’ll get a free line.

OklaFlyGuy,

I’m using several sizes of the new Orvis Mach Reels and I ABSOLUTETLY love them. I think they are the best reels Orvis has ever had for their size.

They are really lightweight, have an incredible drag, high speed retrieve, very large backing capacity and are a great looking reel.

Oh, and I forgot, their priced rediculously low for this catagory of reel. What more could you want?

Dang it, D. Miscus, when did they start giving away “FREE” lines with the purchase, that makes it even more of a ridiculous deal.

Wouldn’t you know I just recently purchased 4 of them. That would have been like buying three and getting one free for me, especially since lines are like $60 each. Now that’s just wrong!!!

Where’s Fly Goddess, I’m sure she will lend me her shoulder to cry on!!!

Orvis Mach reels have proven to be very reliable. The Mach is a true large arbor which makes for the larger cranking radius, also the faster retrieve. The Orvis Battenkill LA and Scientific Anglers are also true large arbor reels.
The Orvis Mid Arbor, Tioga Magnum and some others really are standard arbors with a piece taken out of the center, thus they do not offer the fast retrieve of a true large arbor. Like the large arbor though they do give up some backing capacity. I’ve used several large arbors and the Orvis Mid Arbor and have never found that the shorter backing string was a problem, even on big northern coho and the like.

The reason the get the name Mid Arbor is as said they take the middle out of the reel, but they are wider, so lot more backing with out that one inch diameter center like on a traditional. Less pig tailing of line. LA are great, that each turn of the reel is bringing in almost a foot of line.

and I agree totally with Les Johnson in that a lot of reels call themself LA but in truth are Mids (Galvin is one)

yu looking for a reel with huge backing capacity see the Fly Logic 890.

aka–when did you buy them? go back to the store and see if they can do anything for you. i’d be surpriesed if they didn’t.

D.Micus,

Boy wouldn’t that be something, I’ve actually owned them for several months now and I would feel really bad if they gave me new lines this long after buying the reels.

Orvis has always been great about any of the “few” returns I’ve had, and I would just not feel right about it, I would feel like I was taking advantage of them.

But thanks for suggesting it to me, had it been sooner I probably would call them to the mat!!!

So to quote a past President “Just not gonna do it”.

I am also in the market for an 8wt reel. I have looked at the mach by Orvis and did not think the drag knob looked very durable and there seems to be alot of moving parts.
I have really been thinking about the Ross cimmaron maybe the CLA. I know it is not a true LA but it should hold a fair bit of backing in case I get into a large fish. I have also looked at the Lamson Litespeed and they are light weight but I’ve no experiance with them either.

Any thoughts here?
