More olive stillwater goodness from B.C.; non-tox underbody is optional. I see the peacock sword wingcase as pretty but short-lived.

hook - Mustad 9671 #10
thread - Danville 6/0 olive
tail/throat - guinea hen dyed olive (1Tbsp Rit Yellow, 3/4 Tsp Dark Green in 1 cup water)
rib - oval tinsel gold
body - Zelon dubbing baetis olive
wingcase - peacock sword
thorax - peacock herl

Part 1

start thread at 2/3 mark and wrap to bend

measure (gap width past bend) some guinea fibers; tie in/trim

tie in rib

dub thread/dub body (this one’s on the slender side; make it as buggy as you want depending on what you’re trying to imitate)

counterwrap rib; tie off/trim

Part 2

as an alternative to a wrapped hackle throat, this one will be tyed DeFeo Style

cut out tip of guinea feather, tie in

pull stem forward until the tips are even with the hook point, secure with a few wraps against the body shoulder to set angle, trim butts

tie in peacock sword fibers

tie in peacock herl, twist around thread and wrap thorax

pull wingcase over thorax; tie down/trim, whip finish, SHHAN

Gotta love the mystery of fly names. I was expecting a heavy dose of “chrome” (eg, flash) with this one but the name must have another origin.

A good drop of UV resin on the wingcase might be nice. Add to the durability and also give the wingcase some depth while still showing off the Peacock Sword.

I like John’s idea about the UV Resin. I’m wondering if I were to do a bigger version on a heavier hook, would it work for Steelhead?

If you want to keep the fuzziness of the peacock sword wingcase, instead of putting resin on top put a very small amount of super glue on the thorax before you pull the wing case over.
