14ft SAWFISH ON FLY

thats right papi!!! I am still in shock myself…was out looking for permit/bones in one of my usual spots and they were everywhere…as I was surveying the situation to decide which bone I would take when I noticed a torpedo coming right at me from 100yds…I thought that this was the permit I have waited for but from the size of the wake it was getting bigger every second…I cast with all I had to intercept this wake but it seemed to not care about the cast and was coming on a collision course with me…I dropped the rod and grabbed the camera as impact seemed inevitable…it veered at the last moment and I about fell out of the canoe literally…it was a SAWFISH and it was at least the size of my canoe{14ft}…I was freakin out when my rod yanked real hard…OMG…I have hooked it!!! the ride was on but therre was no way I could “land” this fish as it was hundreds of lbs…I pretended that it wasnt hooked and slowly followed it and cranked up my line as I gave chase…finally I got right on its back and seen my fly stuck on the saw itself…I handlined it right beside the canoe and was able to actually retrieve it without incident…this made him explode…I took as many pictures as I could but everything happened so fast and I didnt know what would happen next…many shots are no good because of sunlight and focus…several are identifiable…best to look at with sunglasses to block out the glare but I believe you will see it for yourself…I am still freakin out and this is truly the biggest fish I have ever caught…this is a story that NOBODY will believe BUT I HAVE PICTURES

Holy heck. You’ve certainly got more self-confidence than I do. I’d have busted that sucker off and called it lucky. No way am I reeling myself up to a 14 foot fish. No way at all!

Wish I could have been there to see that! I bet that was an adrenaline rush and a half!!

I’ll bet you needed new shorts after that one! WOW!!!
Mike

Awesome pictures and story! I saw a saw fish once when I was growing up in South Africa, but that was the only one I ever got to see.

TT.

That’s incredible! Imagine if you had been wadding. We’d be calling you Stumpy!

Pretty spectacular lookin’ critter. Fishing for brook trout in fresh water isn’t quite the same. That will be a memory to pass on to the grand kids.

Rick

honestly, i thought saw fish were mythical–or extinct! shoot, that is flat out amazing. hooray for good cameras!!

Great story! Have you figured out how to get the pucker mark out of your canoe seat yet?

Jim Smith

LOL…no pucker marks…I standup when fishing

Better check the shorts…

yes…thats another story:D …truth is I didnt know the 1st thing about them before this and I was pretty sure he was out to get me and after seeing this monster so close I will admit to a couple of times that I had to talk myself into continuing…I know now that he was probably speeding up to intercept the falling crab and just didnt see me yet…now I know they are harmless as long as you dont wade

You are going to need a bigger boat…

to quote a line from a favorite movie

I think that you are going to have a hard time topping your personal best. Great fish! Great pictures! Great job! 8T

To see one of these fish close up is indeed an amazing experience and one you will remember for the rest of your life. Did you call the hotline#? There is a hotline that you are supposed to call to report your sighting as these fish are getting rarer and rarer. It’s great that you were able to snap some pics.

Here is a link to an article that contains info on the Sawfish as well as the hotline # and email address.

I have been lucky enough to see 3 close up during fishing trips out of Flamingo and also to the Marquesas. Amazing creatures!

YES…I already turned in the info ASAP…it is good you mention that though Dr. Fish…I have never seen one myself and I rarely stray from the flats so I haven’t even seen any posting about sightings or any info…I just felt it should be reported because I also tag bonefish for the Marine School Study…I had to fill out a couple questionaires…I am glad to see somebody is on top of things

Wow!! What’s incredible is that you were also able to get pics!!

Great job.

Jeremy.

That’s great!

The first one I ever saw (no pun intended) was on a flat on the south side of the Marquesas. We were targeting Shark on the fly and light tackle and had a MONSTER that was 16ft long swim right up and start smacking the Barracuda around we had hanging off a rope. It was a sight to behold being so close to it in just 30" of water. We cut a fillet off and fed it to him and it swam off : )

I have only one postable word

WOW

Those are awesome pics—we hasd 3 swim around our flats boat while trapon fishing about 10 years ago—i thought it was great but my guide was really quiet—we didnt have a camera.
