It is only the inexperienced and thoughtless who find pleasure in killing fish for the mere sake of killing them. No sportsman does this. - W.C. Prime, 1888

AMD AND THE FLY FISHERMAN

AMD : (Age-related Macular Degeneration)

I tried a magnifier light. I tried clip-on magnifying lenses. I finally had to admit that my vision was deteriorating. I believe that some of you can relate to the following examples: - I had great difficulty threading 4lb leader through the eye of a #8 hook.

CADDIS - FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP

In 1981, Gary LaFontaine published his masterpiece entitled Caddisflies. This body of work brought to the attention of the fly fishing community the importance of caddisflies as related to the feeding habits of trout. Fly fishers the world over woke to a new set of challenges in dealing with creating effective imitations and fishing the various forms of the caddis.

WHAT'S OBSOLETE?

Recently I have been reviewing the writings in some of the classic angling literature, and if you have been following those articles you will notice a common thread emerging. While there are obvious differences between the types of equipment that they used – rodss were longer, slower and heavier, lines were made of silk and leaders from silk worm gut, and reels were made from brass or hard rubber – the equipment that they used is still serviceable today.

MULLYGRUBS

That is called a narrative hook, sometimes asking an interesting question or introducing a word which sounds sort of neat - in other words a method of getting your attention.

Mullygrubs is Smoky Mountain English. It means being depressed or down in the dumps, or just another word for cabin fever or the shack nasty’s.

RICK Z AND THE SHACK NASTY'S

No, I’m not talking about a punk rock band. It’s that condition during late January that my sweet husband has come to, on his days off, walking from window to window, looking out at the snow and muttering under his breath or flopping down in his chair and examining his eyelids from the insides. He’s deliriously happy when the mail comes; bringing little poufy packages filled with fluffy hooky things.

TRIP PLANNING

Ah, February and cabin fever or shack nasty’s have struck with a vengeance. With snow arm pit deep to a tall NBA center and with cold so intense it makes the bones ache – inside the house – it’s time to remember that summer is just 4 months away. It’s time to plan a fishing trip. At FAOL we have 3 sponsors that specialize in making your trip a success, and recently we have had an inquiry from another fly shop/guide service in New Mexico that would be glad to assist our FAOL readers in planning a trip to that state.

PERFECT ZONKER

The Zonker was originally designed by Dan Byford of the Unite States. It is a cousin of the matuka, which is a fly from New Zealand. They are both streamers, and what distinguishes them from other streamers is that the wing of the fly is tied in at the eye and also tied in along the hook shank, or at least at the hook bend.
