MAKING OF A SURVIVAL KIT

Survival kits are as personal as Fly Fishing gear and styles. This is my take on what could be carried in a personal survival kit while fly fishing. I carry two kits, depending on the season, summer and winter.

CALLIBAETIS

According to Mayflies of the World, A catalog of the Family and Genus Group Taxa, (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) By Michael D. Hubbard, published in 1990,  Callibaetis are found in both North & South America.

FALL ANTS

“You should be out on the creek about 4:30 or so tomorrow evening. The big carpenter ants are flying and I saw lots of them tonight. You and Dee should have good fishing until dark.”

When my nephew, the professional fly fishing outfitter, gives me a hot tip on a potential fly fishing opportunity I tend to pay attention.

OVER THE HILL GANG

My husband Trav mentioned last week our trip down to West Yellowstone for the FFF Fly Fair, which would have been the week just before the Labor Day weekend. I’m not associated with FFF an more and so I have no way of knowing how they decided on that date, but it pretty much assures there aren’t going to be very many young people (as in kids) in attendance. And there weren’t, and it didn’t seem like there was much aimed at them either.

RUDENESS

I had a chance to get out to a pond that I have not been to for a while. It is near the University and the golf course. I have been told that the fishing has improved a lot in this pond over the last few years. Winter kill a few years ago did a lot to help this pond.

TOMORROW'S FLY FISHERS

One of the advantages of getting out and attending the FFF Fly Fair (Conclave) in West Yellowstone recently was running into Fanny Krieger, (wife of the late Mel Krieger.).

THE INTRODUCTION

I stood there on a large gravel bar along the Nisqually River on Ft Lewis Washington, with a long flat bend before me. From that point it was but a few miles to where the river emptied into the Nisqually basin in the Puget Sound. Being fresh from “back east”, I had been anticipating getting on water for some time.

SLOPE CADDIS

Lemme’ see here…hmmmm…I went with scraggly

This Caddis Cripple/Emerger was meant to be messy. I wanted the abdomen to hang lower in the water. The abdomen is a proven design off John Barr’s Graphic Caddis. The Snowshoe Rabbit outriggers are for additional support and motion. I went with the full length of the fibers rather than clipping them. The KF under wing is for sparkle I really like SLF Prism for its translucent quality and sparkle…
