Individual taste in books varies as much as the favorite rod or fly. With that in mind, we hope to review books and videos from the ever-growing fly fishing world, and share them with you. Books will be the best of all worlds, new and old. Many of the old books are now available in reprint, and the wisdom contained is timely today. Others can be found in second-hand book stores, or by mail order dealers. As we find videos we feel are outstanding they will be included. Be assured, reviews are based on what we have actually read or viewed, and due to that fact, may not appear weekly.

Tomorrow’s Fly Fishers
Fly Fishing for Young People
Simple and Fun
By Fanny Krieger and Friends
DVD

One of the advantages of getting out and attending the FFF Fly Fair (Conclave) in West Yellowstone recently was running into Fanny Krieger, (wife of the late Mel Krieger.).

Fanny has been very active in the fly fishing world over the years. She is a FFF Fly Casting Certified instructor, inducted in Hall of Fame of the Northern California Council of the Federation. Co‑Founder of the “Golden West Women Fly Fishers” in 1983 and Founder of the “International Women Fly Fishers” in 1995. She has taken women groups fishing all over the world and confided to me that she is done trying to teach women. Something about them not being serious about the sport and more interested in having their nails done, which is too bad for the girls, but hurrah for the kids.

This new release really is a simple and fun way to introduce kids to fly fishing. She has a captive audience as the four kids in this DVD are her grandchildren. She doesn’t do it alone, she has some great help. Tim Rajeff has some fun games to help get the kids using the fly rods in the right way. When it’s time to catch a fish, Lori-Ann Murphy shows the kids how with great humor.

When we got home from the Fly Fair, nephew Tom Travis stopped by - I asked if he had anything important to do for 45 minutes and he said no. So Trav, Tom and I watched the DVD together. We all agreed the basic concepts of it are just dandy. The weak part - and one that could have either been left out or carefully edited - was Rachel Andras “exposing the world of Bugs and Flies.” The insect identifications were correct, but unfortunately the descriptions of the flies she tied don’t match the actual flies, which are poorly tied at best.

If you have children don’t wait until they are too old, once they show an interest in fly fishing, plug this DVD in and watch it with them. If they are still interested start looking for easy fly fishing combinations. Fanny does say on the DVD that it took a week to film it - I don’t suspect you can teach everything in the DVD in one day either, but it is the best starting point we’ve seen.    ~dlt
