NET MAKING TUTORIAL
Landing nets come in many shapes and sizes. The size of the net is determined by intended use and the size of fish you expect to catch.Smaller nets with shorter handles work well for wade fishing.Longer handles can be useful for float tubing. Large hoops and very long handles are best used from a canoe or boat.

K.I.S.
Acronyms. We live in a world filled with acronyms. Acronyms are an easy way to shorten a long title into a short and easily recognizable line of letters. Rather than writing out Internal Revenue Service we use an acronym – IRS. Tell me what adult person in the USA – United States of America – does not automatically recognize that acronym. K.I.S.S., an acronym that has been used in an attempt to remind people to keep things simple, also indicates that a person that fails to do so is somehow less than intelligent. I prefer to drop the derogatory last letter [stupid] and simply use the acronym K.I.S. – Keep It Simple.

ADVANCED FLY CASTING
A little story about the word Advanced. Been there, in fact the late Castwell and I taught classes for Delta College in Michigan, a satellite of the University of Michigan. The college suggested we teach two classes to cover the gamut of people who might want to learn to fly fish. So the listings of the classes went out with two sections of Fly Fishing. Beginning and Advanced. The first night of the Beginning class was very disappointing - no one signed up, but not to worry, the advanced class was scheduled for the next night. We were amazed! Fifty-seven people had signed up and shown up for the advanced class.

TWO AND ZERO
It is my second trip of the year, so it’s time to hit another pond and see what might develop. I head to a pond that I know has crappie in it. Hopefully there will be some close to the shore and I can try for them.

ROPE DUBBING BY DON ORDES
As many of you know I have been tying flies for many years now. I am a somewhat of a fly fishing bum. Today I mostly tie for my own fishing pleasure, but I also tied commercially for a few years.
As I look back over my years of tying I asked myself if I were honest with myself, what area or part on my tying actually needed improvement. There have been many material additions to my tying bench over the years, and many of them, though beautiful, are really not user friendly, and one of these is DUBBING!! |
THE GIFT (Part 2)
“I take it that you have never done this before?”
Ralph nodded his head.
“Well, why don’t you tell me about what you can do?” |
SPRING FORECAST FOR 2010 – BEAVER TAILWATERS
Last year we dealt with lots of high water. Very, very few wading chances made boat fishing a necessity. When we did get wade able water, the weather was usually good at ruining the day. This made fishing very bad, but there is a silver lining to every cloud. In the past few weeks the COE has been able to get the water on Beaver Lake below flood pool and hovering around power pool. This has meant great wade fishing opportunities.

BORCHER'S DRAKE
An excellent generalized dark pattern used for Ephemerella, Isonychia, Leptophlebia and Siphlonurus sp. There is a parachute version that is also very popular today. This delicate pattern deserves a place in everyone’s fly box. It covers a large range of insects.
