Tying Steps:![]() 1. Wind thread from hook eye to the start of the hook bend. Tie in a small clump of calftail of approximately 1 and one half to 2 times the size of the hook shank. The tail should point downwards, this will give a better action to the fly, as well as a more realistic look.
![]() 2. Fix a grizzly hackle at each side of the calftail. The hackles should have the same length of the calftail and point outwards. Tie a few small strands of Krystal Flash over the calftail and then two long strands to form the antennae.
![]() 3. With the thread to the hook point and tie in a black plastic bead eye.
![]() 4. Tie a small clump of calftail over the hook shank and let it lay over it up to midshank. Wind the thread over it, creating a slightly tapered body to the hook eye. You must wind the thread over it until it is well against the bead eyes. Next tie a mono weedguard (if needed) and tie off the thread.
![]() 5. Mix some five minute epoxy and apply it around the hook. You must apply a larger amount over the upper body. Also apply a bit in front of the eyes. You can't leave this fly to set on a drying weel, if you do so the epoxy won't set with the correct form. You should turn it as needed in the vise, and use a needle to correct any imperfections, you want to create a slick, tapered body. Then just wait for it to set completely and go catch some fish!
