The Zoo Cougar has without a doubt been the most productive
fly for really big trout I have ever fished. This fly was the first of the
floating fly concept and has still been the best of the bunch. A floating
fly is a fly designed to be pulled under by the sinking line, as opposed
to weighting the fly. This allows the fly to be kicked and pushed by the
currents when it's not being stripped, giving the fly a very real and

Materials List:
Hook: TMC300.
Tail: Yellow marabou.
Body: Pearl sparkle braid.
Underwing: White calf tail.
Wing: One mallard flank dyed yellow.
Collar: Yellow deer tail.
Head: Same yellow deer hair cut full and
shaped wide.
Tying Instructions:
1. Tie in the tail material and the sparkle braid.
2. Add the calf tail and the one mallard flank feather, secure thread.
3. Spin a clump of deer hair, clip to leave ends facing back.
4. Fill out the rest of the head, packing hair as needed.
5. Trim the head as in photo.
6. Whip and cement the fly.
Tying Tip
When trimming the head use a 'double-edge' razor blade. Hold
the ends of the blade between your thumb and fore-finger and
apply enough pressure to cause the blade to 'buckle' and form
a small arch. This will give you a nice curve to the shape of the
head. Start with the blade at the front and simply ease it back
with a slight sawing motion. The hair will fall away as you trim. ~ KG
