Brown Fur Ant / Transparent Ant

My first encounter with ants as flies for trout came from my grandfather, fishing just below the falls on the Ocqueoc River north of Rogers City Michigan. A hot summer day and nice brook trout rising quietly in the shade of the stream-side cedars. Gramps however, wasn't catching any. He came over to where I was sitting watching, and proceeded to trim almost everything off the small black fly he was using. When I asked what he was doing, he pointed to the water swirling around his feet. There they were - black ants. He proceeded to fish with his abbreviated fly, and we had nice 'speckled' trout as he called them for dinner.

Floating Ants

For the ant pattern listed here, you might try tying the hackle using the Thor-X Fly method, then clipping the underside hackle so just a minute amount is left on the bottom representing the feet.

Materials

    Hooks:  #12 to 26 standard dry-fly hook, Mustad 94833.

Thread:  6/0, 8/0 color to match that of the dubbing.

    Tail:  Optional.

Body:  Natural fur dubbing for the larger sizes, or silk dubbing in the smaller sizes. (16 or less.).

Hackle:  Dry fly hackle, usually black.

Tying Instructions:

1. The ant is a pretty simple pattern, starting at the bend of the hook, dub two humps, with just bare thread between them.

2. Tie in hackle for legs in the middle.

3. If using the Thor-X method trim off not quite to the bottom of the dubbing just on the bottom!

4. Whip finish and cement.

Variations:

Color: Several colors are suggested, black, brown, red, tan, bright red and white!

I've discussed the ant pattern with several of our readers, one ties a tiny red tail, not more than a quarter of an inch, and says he catches more fish with the red tail.

Sinking or Transparent Ant

Sinking or Transparent Ant

The Sinking Ant is tied using the same method, except using 5 minute epoxy of the humps. For the full transparent effect use silk dubbing. This is also called the Transpar-Ant. You can also tie either fly with one end or the other red.

Fishing Suggestions:

The floating ants should be fished as a dry fly, dead drift with no drag. The Sinking Ant is fished as a nymph. ~ DLB
