Brown Fur Ant / Transparent Ant
My first encounter with ants as flies for trout came from my grandfather, fishing
just below the falls on the Ocqueoc River north of Rogers City Michigan. A hot
summer day and nice brook trout rising quietly in the shade of the stream-side cedars.
Gramps however, wasn't catching any. He came over to where I was sitting watching,
and proceeded to trim almost everything off the small black fly he was using. When
I asked what he was doing, he pointed to the water swirling around his feet.
There they were - black ants. He proceeded to fish with his abbreviated fly,
and we had nice 'speckled' trout as he called them for dinner.
Floating Ants
For the ant pattern listed here, you might try tying the hackle using the
Thor-X Fly method, then clipping
the underside hackle so just a minute amount is left on the bottom representing the
feet.
Materials
- Hooks: #12 to 26 standard dry-fly hook, Mustad 94833.
- Thread: 6/0, 8/0 color to match that of the dubbing.
- Tail: Optional.
- Body: Natural fur dubbing for the larger sizes, or silk dubbing in the
smaller sizes. (16 or less.).
- Hackle: Dry fly hackle, usually black.
