Insert a hook into the vise and build a good thread base. |

Tail: Tie in 5 or 6 strands of black Krystal Flash, slightly into the bend of the hook, extending 3/8" (9.5mm) beyond the end of the hook. |

Shellback: Trim the 3/8" (9.5mm) wide strip of black foam to a shallow point and tie in at the tail tie in point, extending to the back of the fly over the tail. |

Ribbing: Make a loop of tying thread long enough to rib the body, plus secure the shellback. |

Body: Tie in the orange sparkle yarn immediately in front of the back material and wrap forward about 2/3 hook's shank length. Secure with tying thread and trip the excess close to the hook shank. |

Shellback: Pull the shellback forward over the top of the body and secure with tying thread at the front of the body. Trim the excess foam strip and leave approximately 1/8" (3mm) clear of the tie-in. |

Ribbing: Wrap five turns of ribbing around the entire fly to mold the shellback around the body yarn material, leaving a thin strip of orange between the sides of the foam back, at the underside of the fly. |

Upper Thorax: Trim a 3/8" (9.5mm) foam strip to a point and tie in just ahead of the shellback. |

Lower Thorax: Reverse the fly in the vise (bottom side up). Trim a 3/8" (9.5mm) foam strip to a point and tie in even with the tie-in point of the upper thorax and cover all the thread wraps from the body, shellback, and upper thorax tie-in. The foam strips should angle toward the rear of the fly. |

Wing: Tie in by the butts a cleaned and stacked 3/4-pencil sized clump of light elk hair a bit in front of the lower thorax strip (bottom side). The wing's tips should be even with the hook's bend. Secure and cover the butts with tying thread wraps. Advance the tying thread to within 1/8" (3mm) of the hook eye. |

Lower Thorax: Divide the wing material into equal parts and pull the lower thorax strip between the divided wing material and secure with tying thread 1/8" (3mm) behind the hook eye. Trim close and cover the foam butt with tying thread wraps. Turn the fly right side up in the vise. |

Upper Thorax: Pull the upper thorax strip to the front of the fly and secure with tying thread 1/8" (3mm) behind the hook eye. Whip finish in front of the butt of the foam strip. Trip the foam strip butt and leave 1/8" (3mm) clear of the tie in. |
