What has happened to the art of listening?

This is not new. But just bugged by it more and more every day. Pull up to a drive thru and order a “#3 and a Coke”. Invariably I will be asked(after they say “do you want to supersize that” or “do you want this and that and the other thing”)…“what did you want to drink with that?”

How hard is it to remember “#3 and a Coke”?

And don’t give me “They’re just fast food workers”. A kid with Down’s Syndrome listens better than this(and that’s no crack against people with Down’s Syndrome, it’s a compliment).

What has happened to our society?

I think it’s always been that way. I find getting people to listen to me to be a lot harder than catching wild trout. I guess I’m struggling to make peace with it all. AA rooms, for example, are full of people who weren’t listened to. Sorry to sound so cynical. It’s just the way I see it.

That is the sales pitch that they are required to give to you or loose their jobs. In most parts of the country even minimum wage jobs are getting hard to find.

I don’t like it either but have you gone car shopping lately? The drive thru window is a walk in the park compared to that!

Night Hawks is right they are required to ask, but sometimes I just have to wonder, especially when they ask “and what would you like on that burger” and I have to respond “No, that was the number 3 - Chicken Tenders” They say “Oh, OK and on what type of Bun”

My favorite was when I asked for a burger with “No Cheese” and on the fourth try the counter person threw the burger back at the cook Screaming “I said NO CHEESE!!” She hit him right in the face with it! When he got it right on the fifth try I didn’t eat it, I was afraid of what he might have put on it !!!

As far as the drive thru is concerned, most places could use a sound system upgrade. Crackle and fries crackle. Then they always give me a sprite???

It’s called upselling, and you are right, you can get fired (especially in today’s environment) if you don’t and the mgr or a mystery customer catches you.

There are a couple of grocery stores in our neighborhood that employ young men with Down’s, they are awesome. Their honest remarks are very refreshing, maybe a little embarassing to the customer sometimes but most of us tiptoe around the truth too much.

As for the drive through I typically avoid them, I will park and go inside most times. But if you want good customer service and fast food go to Chick Fil, they only hire good students and offer college scholarships to their employees who can meet the criteria.

Sorry, but I just don’t think it’s fair to single out fast food workers. Sorry to sound a little cranky. Don’t mean any harm.

+1 to Chik Fil A. Same goes for In n Out for those who are graced with their restaurants. They pay more, so are pickier with their employees.

This may have more to do with his experience more than listening skills. “Coke” has become a very generic term. Waaayyy back when I worked food service, someone would ask for “something and a coke” I would them ask them “what kind of soda?” and they would then say “pepsi, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, etc.” So it might be the kid just wanted to make sure you got the right thing.

Or not. Just a thought.

If someone orders a “Coke”, they should be given a Coke. Don’t make the rest of us repeat ourselves because someone is stupid enough to order something other than they want.
Don’t make me repeat myself. I have told more than one place I wouldn’t be back because of it. And i have heard from one place it really shook things up to the point of doing something about it.
Don’t put up with mediocrity. Don’t be a pain in the butt either.
