Using Whiting 100's

Hi,
I KNOW no one else has fished through their materials and said, “Gee, didn’t realize I had that!!” Well, I have some unopened Whiting 100’s. I need to tie some 14’s with that. Now, the 100 is long, the hook is short. Before I muck this up, what is the best way to tie them on? Use the whole string, carefully wrap, tie off and cut? Or, cut a more manageable length, tie that on?
As I say, before I end up with a Whiting 5!!

I always use the full length and trim off after tying in. You get much more out of your materials this way. I do it with almost everything. No point having lots of bits left all over the place.

Hi melk,

We agree with AlanB about using the full length rather than cutting off the feather into more manageable segments. Also, don’t throw away the little pieces left over at the end of the long feather. They usually have a turn or two around a hook left in them; you can use two or three “stubbies” to make “one more fly.” Take care & …

I agree with Alan, use the whole feather and trim as you go. I’d also check the hackle against a gauge - I had a few that weren’t quite uniform down the feather in barb length.

Yeah, wrap the whole feather. Unless you get it exactly right, you’ll generate a lot of otherwise unnecessary waste.

And if you tie like I used to, you get about 200 flies out of that package instead of 100.

Awesome feedback folks. That is what I thought to use the whole thing then clip. Gives me the confidence to go forth and palmer.

Solid advise given and exactly how I do it. Not that you needed yet another individual to confirm it lol. These guys have it covered. When you want to crank out a lot of one pattern in particular, the 100’s are excellent. Makes tying patterns like the Griffiths Gnat even more simple.

100s packs are great, saddle feathers in general are great. can get quite a few flies from one feather :slight_smile:

I’d gotten a package a few years ago and it stayed in my box ignored. I kept thinking I’d been ripped off even though I’d gotten it on sale. There didn’t seem to be much to the package. They just seemed like a few skinny feathers. No bells or whistles. This summer I opened up the pack and was pleasantly surprised. Easy to use and there are more than a few of them. A good deal and something I’ll use and buy again and again.
