Use of Squirrel Tails/Hair

Many of you may know that I am blessed in being able to harvest red squirrels here in Texas, right in my on backyard. I have been want to trade them for flies. Now that I have started tying am asking for ideas and/or patterns based on squirrel. Can you use squirrel for the tail of a gurgler or wooly booger? Does anyone have a pattern or link to pattern for squirrel? Thanks in advance of ideas/patterns. Also, if ya wanna swap, seem to have hit a winter bonanza and have more than I can use right now.

I sent you a pm. Thanks.

Dont forget a clouser—Bob ties small clousers with fox,gray and black with white deer tail

I use it for crawdad fly claws. Tie a bunch on either side for a quick cheap claw and red squirrel would be a good color too!

Y’all are awesome! THANKS!

Mark;
There is an old Michigan Au Sable River fly that is a variation of the Adams. The tail is a few squirrel tail hairs the body is 3 strands of embrodery floss (embrodery floss is 6 strands) with one strand of maroon for the rib. The rest is the same as the Adams.

Many years ago, my father fished the local lakes (Grand Mesa) with a pattern called the Brown Bear. It and a Soft Hackled Muskrat were his favorite flies to use.
Hook - 3x Streamer, size 6 to 10
Thread - 6/0 Unithread in Black
Tail - Squirrel tail hairs
Body - Brown Chenile
Wing - Squirrel tail hairs
Collar - Brown rooster hackle
The tail of the fly should be about 1/4 the hook length. The Wing should extend just past the bend of the hook.

Here is a pattern I find very effective and simple to tie. John

If you tanned the hide rather than just using the tail, you could cut zonker strips and tie mini-zonkers or slump busters. Check out the Zonked Squirrel Streamer in FAOL Fly of the Week (Previous Flies 2nd Quarter 2005).
