To those of you new (and old) to fly tying.

I thought this might be a good place to put this thread, especially since it has everything to do with fly tying.

I am in the process of putting to video, the entire 20 part Introduction to Fly Tying series that Al Campbell wrote for FAOL.

The first installment is already up, under the “Part 1” of Al’s series.

I will be getting them to Ron Tidd as quickly as I can produce them, and he will be adding them to each part of Al’s series as quickly as he can.

We hope that this will add to the beginning fly tying experience for all who wish to start down this wonderful adventurous road, and perhaps even show a few seasoned tyers a few new tricks.

Check back often to see new installments, and if you hear of anyone who is interested in learning to tie flies, please be sure to recommend that seiries to them. It’s already benefitted hundreds of members and non-members alike.

Thanks everyone,

Thunderthumbs

WOW, I saw Ron’s post on this, Thanks for taking the time to add to an already great tutorial. Some people learn better from seeing, and there are a few out there who don’t read. It will bring this great series to them.

for undertaking this project, Hugo. And thanks in advance on behalf of all the folks who will benefit from it.

Sounds like a winner.

I think Al would be very proud. I for one learned alot
reading and studing Al’s series on tying and still go back
and read them. I can still pick up detail’s I missed the
last time around. Now with the video’s it will be fun to
go through them again. Thank’s Hugo and thank’s
to Al Campbell.

Very nice job with the first of the series. Congratulations and thank you for all who will benefit both from Al’s material and your presentation, he would have been very happy to see this transition.

Hey… great job! The photos and music were great additions, keep up the good work and let us know when the next section is available.

That is Awesome! I loved just reading the tutorials, I can’t wait to see them put to video. Thanks!

Part One brought a tear to my eye, remembering Al. What a great fly tier, fly fisher and friend. Thanks for taking this upon yourself, Hugo. Very well done.

Thank you so much!

Great video!! I had to watch it a couple times, so far, as some of Hugo’s pictures were from waters I know. Thought maybe I’d see someone I knew in them! Al would be so proud! Thank you, Hugo!!

Hi Hugo,

I very worthy project and exceptionally well done. Much thanks for your time and effort! 8T

Having sort of learned fly tying with the help of pictures (easier than simply reading text with no pictures!), I thought I had it easy. But it was still tough. Having watched a few videos lately, and actually WATCH somebody go through the motions…I find I’ve learned a number of things…tips that experienced tyers do without thinking. Its helped me as I continue to learn and practice tying. Plus, I also find I can watch the video, then an hour or day later can sit down and tie up the pattern by memory…much more easily than if I’d just seen the steps in print. Maybe not everyone is like this, but it seems to work for me.
I’ve been tying for a few years now, and remain very impressed by the skills I see when others post videos.

Thanks!!

Hugo,
Thank You seem’s so inadequate for the work You’ve done on this.

It has been and will continue to be my pleasure to do this for FAOL. Not only is it a great way to help FAOL grow, but for me personally, it’s just a small way to repay the all those here and on the rivers and streams that I’ve fished who have helped me over the years.

Nicely done!!! Thank you for making this happen!

Bravo! That is simply just a wonderful project. Much appreciated by many now and many more into the future.

Hugo;
I was given (for B-day) tying lessons at a really good Fly Shop. I believe i have grown with Al s tutorials (I know I have), now that you are putting them in video is just amazing. I can’t imagine the work that must be for you. You are A GREAT PERSON.

Thank You Hugo

I have been following this website since 2022 and have loved it. I started in beginners fly tying, went through intermediate, and did relevant advanced flies. I now do a newsletter for 800 TU members in North Carolina and reference it often. I can’t find the fly tying instructions on this revised website. I think it is awesome, have it referenced on our Hicory TU website and have used some articles and cartoons in the newsletter with reference to you site. Will you be reviving the levels of fly tying instructions, cartoons, and short stories?

That should have said I’ve been following since 2002.
