something new from tiemco??
Hi Norm. It says they’ve renewed their thread so they must have made it at one time. I’ve been tying 30 years and I’ve never heard of it. But, if it’s 16/0 and is as strong as 6/0 & 8/0 I’ll give it a try.
Happy New Year,
Bruce
Norm
Thanks for the link. 16/0 as strong as 6/0 and 8/0??? what is it mini kevlar thread, for $4.80 a spool it better be way good stuff. Might try it but at that price I can get three spools of regular 6/0 at my local shop on sale for about the same amount, although I really don’t need any thread right now.
If anyone gets it and tries it let us know how it handled!!!
Thanks
Fatman
Limited colors and as expensive as Benecchi. Pass.
I will succumb and order a couple of spools and give it a try.
And let Ya’All know what I think. Thanks Norm;)
i was okay with 14/0, does the world need 16/0?
Ha, ha. I just bought some uni trico 17/0
i have a few spools and rarely use it. i almost am positive that some of the synthetic materials when tied in with that stuff create friction weakening the thread.i have broken this thread before tying in zelon wings. now the only time i use it is for cdc tricos, when the going gets tough in late summer.
uni caenis is about 19/0-20/0

How about some Danvilles 18/0 Spider Web?? LOL!!!
Best regards, Dave S.
Normand - Thanks, and at a good price too!
TMC 16/0 thread is renewed! This new thread is pre-waxed and now much stronger than our previous products. Once you use this thread for tying small trout flies, you won’t be able to go back to standard 6/0 or 8/0 thread!

I don’t think it says stronger than 6/0 or 8/0. The wording is cleverly applied to let you think that but it says “Stronger than our previous products”. Just my .02 on the subject.
I don’t know, I tie down to size 28s using 8/0 with no trouble. I bought some of that caenis stuff, but I don’t see the need for it. Just my opinion.
I bought some UNI-Caenis 20 den for my #32’s, but OMG any tension on the bobbin and it is breaking…live and learn. I will stick with my 10/0 or Sheer 14 This stuff is useless.
Works fr me…
17/0 Trico Thread, 40 denier, white only
“Existing threads are often too bulky for tiers who work with hooks smaller than size 20. UNI Products, the leader in innovative spooled materials, comes to the rescue with our new 17/0 Trico thread. This extra-fine, white, polyester thread, is amazingly strong for its diameter. Perfect for caenis, trico, tiny baetis, and micro-caddis patterns. UNI Trico (17/0) is available on 200 yard spool.”
There seems to be ‘trend’ that’s been forming over the past few years towards smaller and smaller flies.
Quite a few experienced fly anglers I know are reaching for the midge box as the ‘go to’ place to start on most of the streams they fish.
That new book, MODERN MIDGES (Takahashi) has hundreds of patterns in it, the vast majority in sizes 20 or smaller.
Makes sense that the thread makers would try to offer smaller diameter threads to fit this trend. I’m not sure that such fine theads are superior tools for this kind of tying, but that’s a different discussion.
In a few years it will likely change again.

Everything is a matter of need. I have 2 spools of 8/0 that was given to me several years ago that I’ve yet to use. I myself have no need for anything under 6/0. I always thought Benecchi’s 12/0 was really a myth.
I would be willing to bet, that once tied, no one could tell the difference between a fly tied with 12/0 and a fly tied with 16/0 or 17/0.
It also kills me that people don’t flinch at $500 plus price tags on rods, but have a stroke when they see thread for more than 2 or 3 bucks per spool. Yet they shell out $50 for chicken feathers and think they’re getting a bargain because the package says “Super-Duper-Platinum-Grade”??? Whats wrong with this picture?

From an outsiders point (UK),I have never seen or heard a tying thread from Tiemco never mind a 16/0. Was it on sale in the USA because I am sure that it was never in the UK or I would have heard it mentioned at some point.
I can not see by Benecchi 12/0 & use it more & more for “standard” flies It, for me at least is fine tying silk. OK I can see a case for finer if you are tying micro stuff but as a general tying thread without equal to my mind. Can not see where one previous poster condems it as “too dear” It prices comparably with other makes well in the UK at least, so I guess USA would be similar. Old adage applies to pay cheap you get cheap.
