sportsman's guide

I’m thinking about getting myself a new surf fishing fly rod.
Something singled handed, long, and a medium to medium fast action.
The Sportmans Guide has an 11’ 9wt and a 12’10wt in IM6 that I think might be just the thing.
The problem is these are the only two rods they sell under their name, which is pretty strange.
They are also only $40 which is very little for so much stick.
I don’t mind replacing a few components if it comes to that.
Anyone know anything about these rods?

Was it among a horde of such sticks that the owner discovered in an abandoned Rumananian warehouse and got for a steal along with gas masks and Communist era military camo jackets? That might explain the price.

A decent reel seat or set of guides will cost more than $40.But you probably already know that.Sounds like junk to me.Besides,I dont consider 11 or 12 ft rods as one handers. An 11 is marginal if it is very light but a 12 ft,no way.Not to say it cant be done but your in the “cross over rod” territory now.Do yourself a favor and cast a 10ft or longer rod and think if this is what you want to blind cast with for hours. Some people like them but I have never had a reason to go longer than 9ft for the surf.JMHO.

Yes, a single handed 11’ 9wt is exactly what I want.
The extra lenght makes it possible to mend a floating line over the crest of breaking waves for a dead drift presentation.

JC, the discription in the add gives no clue as to the whys and what fors.

Tell you what dudley - for 40 bucks - you buy one of them 12 footers, and if you don’t like it, I’ll buy it from you for 40 bucks.

Tell you what dudley - for 40 bucks - you buy one of them 12 footers, and if you don’t like it, put it on eBay for 60 bucks.

Hummm…Did’nt know Gary had made it to the web…At 40 bucks who cares if you get more than a season out of it…I think you’d done good…and as mentioned…Those idiots on ebay would buy chit if ya told em it was gold…seen alot of down right crap sell for quite a sum of cash on there…But then again…They think they are WINNING the stuff…lol

Ok now before ya’ll go ape on me…I was funn’in…on the winning remark

Around here there is a 10’ 5wt that gets tossed A LOT. It is one of the higher end rods. It IS a pleasure to use.
We also have a 10’ 6wt, of the $40 vintage from somewhere on the web. Sometimes we use it just to stirr the poop, so to speak, when we know there are going to be many “big sticks” around. It is just OK and you can really notice the differences after a half day’s use.
But what the heck…for $40, it’s woth a try. Maybe add to the grip (lengthen toward the tip) to "balance the thing.
