San Diego area Fishing Advice

So I managed to get myself a free trip to San Diego this weekend  , all expenses paid except for Fishing Guides. I was planning on finding a guide, I know last minute in all, so any rec’s would be great.

If not is there anyplace to fish near shore, piers or anywhere Fly Fisherman condusive? Never been so not sure how that might work, I do some quite of but of Salt fishing, just not in California much so I guess what would one expect to catch near shore, if possible, or offshore this time of year? Thanks for any help~

TD, when I was in the Navy spent several years in San Diego. Flyfishing will be tough. Ocean Beach had a fishing pier, but high above the water. Maybe try walking down the jetties, fishing along them. Check out Mission Bay. The upper end of the Harbor Imperial Beach along the strand to North Island. I can’t remember but there maybe a fishing pier in Sea Port Village. The Otay Lakes to the East, have some good sized LMB, but you need a boat, the shore line was choked to much with reeds. Good Luck

That’s too far south for me…sorry. Make sure you pick up a non-resident license (CA offers 1-day, 2-day, and 10-day non-resident sport fishing licenses).

I don’t know if non-residents need the same stamps as locals…if so, and you’re ocean fishing, there’s a stamp you’ll need. Or, you can take a look at the state’s web site yourself: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/fishing/sportfishing.html

Find your guide before you go and check with them on the license/stamps.

Enjoy the trip.

Great SW flyfishing here.

Guide recommendations - all saltwater. All probably booked too but there is always a shot:

Very good fishing at the local kelp beds for calico bass, bonito, barracuda, mackerel lately and a few yellowtail showing.

Bays have been decent for bay bass, croakers and other species and the surfzone always has halibut and perch and the corbina are starting to show.

Best fishing is from a boat though surfzone can be good. Just about any sandy beach can be productive. For beaches early and late is best this time of year on incoming or outgoing tide. Bays fish best on tides that produce at least 3 feet from low to high. Water movement is key.

Decent shore access on western coves of Mission bay also
