Murray's Marauder variation SBS

Ray’s quest for a Clouser/Bugger hybrid http://www.flyanglersonline.com/bb/showthread.php?54607-Behind-the-times got me curious. Started poking around the interweb and hit upon Harry Murray’s Marauder, described as a “cross between a wooly bugger and a Clouser Minnow”. Bingo, I thought, 'till I saw a picture - looked like a lead-eyed bugger with an ostrich tail; definitely fishy looking but the Clouser DNA appeared to be (deeply) recessive/receded. Decided to play around with the basic format and came up with this; change colors to suit your needs.

hook - TMC 5263 #4
thread - UTC 140 brown olive
eyes - brass dumbell
rib - x-fine wire gold
tail/wing - ostrich herl brown/olive
flash - Krystal Flash rootbeer
body - estaz rootbeer
hackle - olive dyed grizzly

Part 1

start thread, create a bump (helps hold the eye in place)

tie on the eye (crosswrap, figure-8; you know the drill), brush on a little Super Glue

tie in rib, wrap to bend

measure (shank length) a clump of ostrich, tie in/trim

tie in KF; fold and wrap back to bend

tie in estaz, wrap to eye; tie down but don’t trim

Part 2

tie in hackle (shiny side forward) by the butt; spiral through body to the bend

trap hackle tip with wire rib, then counterwrap forward to eye; helicopter end, cover with thread

wrap tag eestaz around/through the eyes; tie off/trim

more KF for the underwing

measure another clump of ostrich

Part 3

tie in/trim, whip, SHHAN, trim KF

Haven’t had a chance to fish one, but plan to swing a few (in white, for the walleyes) down below here in a few weeks

Regards,
Scott

Instead of hackle isn’t it olive ostrich herl for a wing?
