Montague

Well, I won my first BooBid on Ebay. It’s a Montague Lake Pleasant. From the pics it looks almost new.It looks as though 2 guide are missing but the wraps are still there.Otherwise the finish looks great, label is perfectand still has the tag on the cork. Only comes with original bag and no tube.I can’t wait till it gets here! I’m going to try to get pics to post when it does.
The only other boo I’ve owned was a Montague Clear Lake and now Castwell has it.Now if I can decide whether to replace the eyes and fish it or tube it and save it for a rainy day.Any suggestions? Oh, by the way, was $50.00 with shipping too much? Thanks and God Bless! John 3:16

John,
sounds like you did all right on that. If I were you, I would replace those guides, and fish that bad boy!!!could be a real hoot!!

Yup, that’s kinda what I was thinkin. That’s what they were made for. Unless it’s in better shape than I thought. Then it might get sold.Guess I need to learn how to replace guides. Can’t be too hard.

Replacing guides is pretty easy- just takes a little practice and time. There are some good resources right here in the rod building section. I’m not sure if you are planning on putting new guides on there, but if your not I have an old set off a monty that would probably work for your rod. I would have no problem sending down the ones you need. Just let me know.

Great name for a rod. Lake Pleasant is a nice village nestled in the town of Montague. The lake itself is a reservior and you can’t fish it. Its very pretty and I have a photo or two I can post if you’re interested.

GBurgFisher, I will get back with you on those guides when the rod comes in. I need to see about matching the thread for them too. Might have to rewrap all of them.

Jed, I would like to see Lake Pleasant if you have the time to post them. Thanks

GBurgFisher, PM’d you.

John,
I looked for the photos that I took and can’t find them. If I get a chance and shoot some others I’ll post them.

No problem Jed, thanks.

GBurgfisher,I PM’d you again.

What type of thread should I use to rewrap and where can I purchase it? I understand you use some type of varnish on the wraps. Just varnish like you can get at Lowes or Home Depot?

Those guides will be out in the mail this afternoon. I apologize for the delay…I did not remember that there would be no post on Monday. Typically, most people use silk to re-wrap their rods. I’m pretty sure you could manage with the nylon thread used for graphite, but I would stay away from anything else. Golden Witch (http://www.goldenwitch.com/) has a great selection of colors, and you can probably match what is already on the rod. As per varnish…you want to stick with a spar varnish. Lowes and Home Depo (at least the ones around me) carry this, but only have it in a huge can that would be enough varnish for hundreds and hundreds of rods. Its not cheap either at forty bucks a can. I buy from Jamestown distributors (http://www.jamestowndistributors.com). They have a great selection and most come in varying sizes. Stay away from urethane based varnishes, and stick with a resin based varnish ? its more flexible, repairable, and requires less sanding between coats. Hope this helps.

Thanks. As soon as it gets here I’ve got some flies to send back to you. Maybe I could hit a cabinet shop and get a small amount of the varnish from them.

Usually Ace hardware will carry them…I don’t know if you have an OSH…I picked up 1/2 pint for about $8.00…You can get 4x as much (quarts) for about $18.00.

I’m only varnishing the guides not the rod…so the 1/2 pint will be more than enough.

BTW I’m using McGloskeys man o war spar varnish.
