Mercer's Z-Wing Caddis Emerger SBS

Most often seen on a scud hook; tied here as an October Caddis, hence the longer iron. Easy tie, catches fish.

Part 1

Mash down barb, attach thread, wrap back to point above barb

tie in 2 sections of turkey tail (1/3 gap width), one on top of the other

tie in rib

dub thread, dub abdomen up to 75% mark

pull turkey over the top, tie down and trim

spiral rib forward, helicopter end and cover with thread

Part 2

tie in CH; divide, wrap back so that it extends down both sides, then trim (even with hook point)

dub thorax

Another great tie and SBS, Scott. What about instead of using two separate sections of turkey, you cut one larger one and fold it in half lengthwise? Would that work about as well?

Joe

Joe,

That would probably work just fine; thanks for the suggestion.

Fantastic photos, excellent lighting, thanks for posting.

Excellent

I tie and fish this for the early season Brachycentrus on a size 16 scud hook

Thread: Black (tag end use for ribbing)
Back: black biot (either goose or turkey)
Body: caddis green whatever dubbing
Wings: Dark gray zelon
Head: Black dubbing of some sort.

THIS…is an excellent pattern!

I love this fly. I’ve fished it for years in the olive version, and trout have been very happy to munch it.
