After spending the past few weekends chasing Bowfin, Gar, Common Carp, Grass Carp, etc…I changed it up this weekend and went after the little stuff again, with micro-flies. I tie a micro fly on either a #24 hook or a Tanago hook, and then trail that roughly 4"-6" behind a #14-#18 tungsten beadhead fly. The bigger heavier fly is mainly to help get the tiny fly to sink… but many micros will try (sometimes successfully) to attack the larger fly.I went to a small creek. I hoped to find some shiners and dace in their beautiful breeding colors. Well, I must have missed the spawn, because what I caught had less colors than during my earlier visit this year. The Longear Sunfish had better colors this time, tho. And the male Northern Studfish were looking pretty awesome. I’ve been wanting better pictures of those male Studfish, and I like how some of these turned out.Anyway, I ended up catching 14 species, which might be my new Personal Best for species in one day? What I caught was: Blackspotted Topminnows, Blackstripe Topminnows, Northern Studfish, Longear Sunfish, Green Sunfish, Bluegill, Hybrid Sunfish, a Northern Rock Bass, Kentucky Spotted Bass, Largemouth Bass, Bleeding Shiners, Striped Shiners, Creek Chubs, and a Yellow Bullhead.

Good catch & very nice photos as usual Dave. Dennis
