If you could have any tying vise (at no cost to you) which would it be?

What is your “fantasy vise” among those currently manufactured?

It ain’t the vise. It’s the talent I crave, the ability, the skill, the innate talent. or at least a faster learning curve! My Renzetti presentation is a better vise than I am a tier, I need no better.

I think an Anvil Atlas would be my pick. It’s their newest product and I have been impressed with their other offerings. Made in the USA by people who know steel.

I really don’t know. I started on a Herter’s vise, moved to a Regal about 15 years ago and to a Renzetti Traveler about 10 years ago. Every time I look at another vise and try to determine what it will offer me that my current vise doesn’t, I come up short. The Renzetti holds hooks fine, rotates as much as I need it to, and is pretty stable. I’ve been tempted to buy a new vise several times in the last couple of years, but until I can figure how it will help me tie better, I just can’t justify it.

Guess I’m just a bit of a luddite…

Can’t believe anyone could vote for anything but the LAW - but fantasy it shall remain. Second is that vise you have with the engraved jaws.

Hands down the “Dingo vise”.
Which I already own two of them.
One is a Mark I, the other is a Mark II.

My trusted LAW

A Jvice without a doubt but it shall remain a fantasy for some time.

I have a renzetti and a Nor and really like them both but those clean lines and the attention to the really small details as well as just the great ergonomics of it have made me want one for many years.

I learned to tie on a Renzetti traveler and love itso much I am in the process of purchasing a second one to leave at our cabin.
Has anyone seen the new Renzetti line up with choices in all black, stainless, anodized and original finish. I was having a hard time making an upgrade choice but now have this new factor to consider but it willstill be a Renzetti with an extra set of midge jaws.

Last evening I made a post to Byron’s Thread and also asked a question. My response was posted but is now gone. WHY???

I assure you that Admin did not remove it. How about re posting it.

This is a hard one, A J Vice with the Damascus jaws would be nice. I have a list of requirements rather than a particular vice in mind. I have been playing with designs for some time, but not got it sorted yet.

Clamping method: This would have to be a fix and movable plate type for me. Either cam or screw operated. BUT with only one cam or screw to operate for clamping and adjustment. Also I don’t like having to rely on a rubber band around the outside of the jaws, Just personal taste but, I wear them out too fast. So it should have a fixed pivot point. That rules out the Dyna Kings, Regals, HMH, Anvil.

Rotation: Defiantly, must rotate through 360 degrees. True rotary I don’t use a lot but it may be nice to have it. Also The tension should be adjustable with no set index points. I don’t want a vice to drop into an index point and have to be realised before I can move it again. Most of the time I set the vise so it just stays in the position I put it, no tighter. A screw acting on the shaft at 90 degrees will not provide the fine adjustment I like. That rules out the Dyna Kings and Renzettis and many others.

Size range: Time changing jaws is wasted time. I’d want a vice that covers a really good range of sizes with one set of jaws. That would rule out several more makes.

These days I always use a clamp and extension to mount the vice, so a good solid clamp is essential.

All in all I think I’ll stick with my LAW Bench Vice.If I do ever finalise a design I’ll need a top engineer to produce it, one who understands fly tying as well. Hmm wonder if Lawrence would come out of retirement?

Cheers,
A.

Not sure I understand this:
“So it should have a fixed pivot point. That rules out the Dyna Kings, Regals, HMH, Anvil.”
You were just before that talking about not liking the vises which use O rings.
Please explain?
Thanks,
Byron

Danica Danvise, it’s really hard to spend >$100 on a vise for me, think of this, you can buy 1000 hooks! 50 Quality spools of thread, or 100 Cheeseburgers!!!

I am using a Renzetti Master with a speed crank but if I could have any vise it would be the LAW vise by Lawrence Waldron that is no longer made. Used ones go for over $1000 if you can find one.

Very good choice Silver. Still sort of regret having sold mine a while back…

The vices that have O rings use them in place of a fixed pivot. Think about your LAW. The movable plate is pinned to the pivot. The other vice I have that uses the two plate system (Blue Mountain Pocket Vice) doesn’t have a fixed pivot but relies on the band to hold the movable plate, one screw providing size adjustment and the other tightens the vice. I don’t like that system.

Of the list of vices none have the fixed and movable plate system. (Wasn’t sure which point you wanted me to explain).

I have a vise that uses O rings to maintain tension. However, I have had the ones you mentioned and none use an O ring. That is what confused me.
What am i missing?
