While going through my fly boxes to see what I need to replentish, my daughter asked me how many flies I had in the boat. Well, I asked her to help me count them. Now, I do like and use quite a few flies. I fish for bass, panfish and hybrids/stripers. In fact I have a rule when it comes to panfishing(bluegills/warmouths,shellcrackers & crappie) after 10 panfish I change flies just to see what else they will or will not hit. Anyways, I had a total of 980 flies in my fly boxes in my boat. Does anyone else have this disease? Just wondering. My wife says she glad I tie all my flies. Well, it’s off to the vise so I can break a 1000.
Take care,
May the tug on your line be a big one!

i take all my flies with me when i go out in the boat because i never know what i might have a sudden urge to catch  so i probably have around 500-600 flies
Three boxes maybe no more the 100 usually depends on the type fish I’m after. Bluegills box of foam spiders–Small mouth and trout lake some streamers BILL

I’m a kayaker … aka … minimalist. Two - four fly boxes with about a dozen saltwater flies in each.
980!!??? Be honest. How many never have been and never will be tied on the end of your line? :?
Aw heck, I never counted, I have a few boxes i[n the pack[/url:0ce2b] that I swap out and mess with the contents of on occasion.

For warm water I have one largemouth box, one panfish box, and one smallmouth box.
Most times only two of those boxes will go along.
In the salt I carry one large box that will get supplied from a collection of boxes that stays home or in the truck.
I fish warm water out of a canoe, and the salt from a kayak so I don’t like to carry what I won’t use
I can’t count that high as I run out of fingers and toes.

I carry most all my flies but use mainly:
- Eyed wooley buggers
- Wooley buggers
- bees
- bream killers
- poppers
None. I hate fishing out of a boat and haven’t done so for maybe 10 years. When I do use my boat I usually carry about 3 dozen - duck decoys that is

- I tend to be a minimalist. When fishing out of a boat for our local waters I carry 1 box that has 3 flies of 2 patterns, 2 poppers and 4 smaller trailer flies. So i carry about a dozen flies and use 3 at the very most.
Our local waters are for bass ,catfish, crappie, carp and green sunfish.
For trout I do 3 small boxes that hold quite a few small flies
A dozen? On too many occasions I’ve lost more than a dozen flies in a single outing. Though I don’t fish from a boat, I fish from the bank. The place I fish has a lot of brush, logs, branches etc. and since that seems to be where the fish hang out, well… I lose a lot of flies.

We fish heavy cover almost all of the time. Of course I tie weedless( snagless flies). We occationally will lose a fly in the trees if we are careless or excited. If we do get caught under water ( which does not happen very often) it is usually the weigthed eyes and we can rollcast out. If we can’t roll cast out for what ever reason we get out my fly retreiver which is a wooden pole with ring eyed screw near the end of the pole. I cut and polished a slot in the ring eye We slip the line through the slot, hold tension on the line and slide the ring eye down the line and it catches in the bend of the hook . It makes retrieving a fly simple and fast.
We also fish with barbless hooks for saftey, but also so we can realease the fish with less handling and get our lines back inthe water quicker. My buddy caught 130 2-3 lb bass in one day on one fly. Unfortunately I was not with him.
You are using that pole from a boat, right? That sounds like a great idea. How long and what diameter is your pole? I’m not sure I can carry a long enough pole though for when I fish from the bank. Most often the fly is stuck beyond ten feet. I have had luck sometimes roll casting it out, though I make quite a racket doing so.
I’m still new at tying, but I did recently start experimenting with adding a mono loop weed guard. I am still trying to figure out what diameter mono works best.
Unfortunately, my when I am fishing for bluegill, many of my flies are not too conducive to being weedless. At least I don’t think so. Size 12 - 16 GRHE 's or other nymphs for example.
I need a boat.
- yes we use it out of a boat. I have made several for different ponds that are 6-9 feet. If we are fishing from the bank I genrally use a slippery rabbit which is the most snag free fly I tie.
Sometimes if we are fishing for gills we will use 1/124 oz size 10 marbou jigs under and indicator which keep the fly off the bottom
Seeing as how I’ve already hijacked this thread… Sorry Crash.
Tell me more about this slippery rabbit.
The slippery rabbit is a variation of a leadeye leech. By making a tapered yarn head over the eyes , the eyes do not snag. The fly rides hook up and has a double weedguard. By having the weedguard tied in by the head and free at the back you do not miss any fish just snags. This is tied on a mustad size 4 4x long hook. It has nice fishy profile and moves seductively through the water. becuase you very seldom get snagged it is avery efficient fly. Of course you can tie it in any color you want
