The F. E. B. Hopper is my favorite. Very easy to tie and durable. Do a search and you’ll find it on this site.

… surprise, surprise, I’m going to endorse that fly also.

Just an additional note. This fly was probably taken as much for a golden stone last summer in many places in Idaho and Montana that I fished with it as it was for a hopper. Also, once you get the tying techniques down, it is easy to use the basic approach for salmonflies, golden stones, and skwalas by varying size and color combinations. I believe some BB members have also tied it in black for a cricket.

90% of the time I fish a Satsop Stone or light colored stimulater with hackle trimmed on the bottom for hoppers. Slap it down and give a twitch…works well.

+1 for the FEB Hopper. I tied up some tan/brown ones, and all black. Seemed to get more hits on the all black, in a size 12. Bluegills and bass love 'em!

Riverroads Creations has cutters for hoppers. Cut two pieces of foam. Tack one down about 1/4 of the way from the larger end. This creates a head. Add a piece of freezer glad bag for the wing and tie in the same spot. Tie in rubber legs on each side Madam “X” style. Tie in the last cut piece of foam (again in the same place). The whole process takes a couple of minutes. I super glue the first piece of foam to the shank and then glue the flared pieces at the head together.

I still tie Al’s foam hopper. This was the first kind of hopper I ever tied, and still do.

Nice hopper! I tie a very similar style but do a dubbed abdomen. I really like the foam you show in yours. Looks like an idea worth stealing. Thanks for posting the link!
