Grass carp are great fighters. I don’t know anyone who goes fishing for them as their primary target but most fishermen are willing to chase whatever presents itself. I have been fortunate to catch a few grass carp including one around 7.5 lbs. on a 3 wt. It pulled me around in my float tube a little while.
Actually here in Phoenix, we have quite a few people that target them in some of the urban waters. Some are common, some are grass, and some are Koi. Its a real rush on 5 to 7 lb ones, as all I and my wife use for them are our 2wt’s
Ever thought of selling the big koi to dealer/collector? They are big money in fish stores
Nope, strictly a catch and release urban fishery, barbless, and single hook. There are 21 ponds in this complex, state regulated and some up to a mile in perimiter.
Also regulary patrolled by state park rangers.
here’s how we do it,

Grass Carp are a great sports fish and very wary most generally. The jury is out on thier fighting capabilities as some say so-so while others rate them high. For sure they can get huge and a 50 lb fish will fall to a fly one of these days. I’ve taken a couple by accident while fishing for Bass/Brim using a Madame X or Turck Tarantula and I say by accident as they are known to be primarily veggie feeders. I’ve caught a lot more by “matching the hatch” with a Sister Carol’s Grass Fly when they were cutting the grass around run off and other ponds in the central Florida area. In many states they are a protected fish, a hybrid, and stocked to control vegetation while in other areas they are not hybrids or protected. The ones I’ve caught fought well enough and due to their size (6-20 lbs plus) gave a great tussle on the fly rod!
a Madame X or Turck Tarantula are really good flies for common carp when carp are feeding on the surface. I’ve caught carp with them many times. I thought I was the only who used them for carp.
I think they believe they are spiders?? I’ve caught several Common Carp and the Grassies. I try and get them out in front of the fish and let the fish swim up to them without any more movement.
