I have a friend who claims that his feet don’t get wet when he wears Gore-Tex socks over hiking socks in his trail shoes when in heavy rain or walking through water. Any of you have a similar experience? Anyone use Gore-Tex socks over hiking socks with your wading shoes and no waders?
Dear slough foot,
I use Gore-Tex socks a lot in waders. I bought them the first time because the fabric liner in my boot foot waders was getting ripped up and it made it difficult to get my feet into the boots.
I’ve used them ever since. I’m not convinced they are the bee’s knees, but they have kept my feet reasonably dry when wearing waders and shoes that I know weren’t 100 percent waterproof. I use the thin shell type Gore-Tex socks and not the insulated version.

Tim Murphy
P.S. With a name like Slough Foot you must be a BR549 fan. That’s my favorite song of theirs.
As an added note. Gore Tex can be waterprofed with out losing insulating performance. “Thinsulate” can not!
I have used the calf high type gore tex sock when canoeing and portaging in the Boundry Waters. kept my feet dry all the time
slough foot…
I’m no expert but wouldn’t it make more sense to wear the Gore-Tex socks under the insulating socks? That way the moisture would be kept away from your feet and in the insulating material. Most modern insulating materials will still keep you warm, even when wet.
Bill,
Do you wear the Gore-Tex sock over your regular socks? Also, do you wear water proof boots?
I wear light socks under the gore tex sock, then just my wading shoes. This allows me to get out of the canoe in shallow water, (below calf high water) and unload the canoe etc. without having to balance on above water rocks which never seem to be in the right place Ha. portaging a canoe and heavy packs is bad enough without haveing wet feet
As a reformed tournament golfer I learned very quickly about playing on the dewy grass and having wet feet the rest of the day. As a result I wore and still wear SealSkinz. They are not Gore-Tex but they are water proof and very breathable. They also make socks that are fully immersible, which I haven?t tried. If you are hiking/golfing etc. in wet conditions these kinds of products are indispensable. I do not wear them in my waders as my feet sweat enough as it is, and it is my opinion that the neoprene will cancel out the breathable nature of the socks.

Where can you buy the SealSkinz socks? Do you know of anywhere that sells them online? (I’m in Australia.)
I’m hiking up the northern Skeena River (BC) in August and expecting the banks to be damp and also to have to cross and recross the river. To have dry feet would be great.

I purchased mine at REI about 5 or 6 years ago, and there’re still going strong. You can buy online at:
