Good snow news for the Colorado mountains

We’ve been worried about the snowpack this winter, which was forecast to be cold, windy and dry. Many Colorado trout streams had serious low water problems last summer.

The good news – over 23 inches of snow at my house so far today, still snowing at over an inch per hour, and is supposed to continue all night! And I’m in the freakin’ foothills, not the high mountains! We’ll probably have to postpone Christmas dinner until everyone’s plowed out, but that’s a small price to pay for good water levels and good fishing next year!

Got a pile of firewood inside, got the snowshoes out of the attic, and red beans n’ rice simmering on the woodstove the last 4 hours. Even my big Husky dog Kodiak is staying inside tonight…and I’m finishing up tying flies for the stilllwater swap…a very pleasant evening all around.

DANBOB,

Don’t think I’d like to be driving down the Poudre River canyon tonight.

I don’t think you would have a chance to make it to the Canyon everything is shut down. I tried to get our of my drive way and got stuck in a 4ft drift.

The snow pack is good news, the Black Hills are still suffering. We had hoped on having a Fish-In out there in '07, but the best advise is don’t do it yet…still not recovered from the drought. On the other hand we’re over our usual wet allowance here, we could send some your way

I guess we will be the ones DREAMING of a White Christmas.

Hoo boy – woke up this morning to 52 inches of snow, with drifts over 5 feet! Gonna be stuck at home tying flies for a few days it looks like. I’ll put some pictures up on my website after the sun come up today and post the link here.

Hey youz CO dudes,
Ya seem to have this one all to yourselves. You’re snowed in and the tourists can’t get to ya. Denver airport is closed. Life is good.

Mark

Good news. You need snow to make water.
You need water to float the fish.
You need fish to be happy.
Yeah snow!

Oh yeah, Gnu Bee, there’s no possible way I can complain about too much snow! Our little brook trout stream was nearly dry last summer, this’ll help our poor brookies immensely. I strapped on the snowshoes this AM and busted trail over to the neighbor’s, 1/8 mile away. Took an hour! The sun came out this afternoon, and my home battery bank is now full. I got plenty of food, coffee, firewood and bourbon. Got all my flies for the Stillwater swap tied today. The county tried to plow our main road, but got stuck – they will try again tomorrow.

Love the Kodidog pic, I had a Huskey that loved snow like that. My Shiz tsu’s are divided .The little female loves it, Her brother hates it.
Interesting website on the eco power stuff too.

YOUR side of the hill got snow, but not this side. 4" new in Paonia, a foot in Ridgway, couple inches in Telluride, and zip on the ground in Cortez.

Yo Danbob I just watched the news that you guys got another snow storm. You still with us buddy?

The eastern plains got it worse than we did on the second blast…only another foot of snow here. I’m hoping to have a vehicle dug out and on the road by friday, so we can hit the big fly show in Denver! DANBOB
