Fly Patches

I just got a new fishpond chest pack for my birthday, but it does not have a patch to dry my flies. The one on my simms vest worked great but it was built in and I cannot remove it. If anyone has a good patch to reccomend that would be great.

Thanks,
Austin

do these fly patches work as well as the nicotine patches??? i definitely need to get some of those to help me cut down on all the endless hours of tying…:D:D

Not eggzacly a patch, but this is light and windproof.

As for drying flies, especially cdc, this stuff is awesome.

Bought a 2.5 sq ft piece for about a buck more.

I have a fishpond vest and it has the built in “fly box” in one of the pockets. Today was my first time using the vest but I used the pocket box to place wet flies. They dried nicely in it.

Just a thought.

Yeah I can’t see why you wouldn’t use the fold down “workbench” but maybe that fly patch is missing? The are replaceable if so. Also I am a big fan of a piece of sheepskin, I am yet to see anything that is as cheap and works as well.

I’ve been thinking about getting one of those Wonder Dry fly patches just for cdc because of how hard it is to get dry. I probably will pick one up now that I know they work.

I thought about using the fold down foam, but i also thought my hooks might rust. Do you zip it back up after you put wet flies in the foam, or do you leave it open for a while untill it dries?

I zipped it back up. My flies were pretty well dry at the end of the day. I suppose you could leave it zipped down. The way my luck goes, I’d loose all of my flies and the replaceable foam insert too.

I just zipped it up. The zippers are not air tight and the act of walking most likely squeezes some air in and out with each step.

Give it a try and see how it works for you.

I have used the previous(maybe 2 or 3 generations old) chestpack by fishpond for 4 years now. It sort of looks like this though:

I just stick my fly’s back in the foam the second i cut them off, and I have never noticed rusting.

My wife bought some of the material advertised on TV. Zorbees or something like that. The orange cloth thing that soaks up spills etc. Don’t tell her, but I cut off a strip and made several drying patchs similar to the amadou patches. Works great and it’s very inexpensive.
Just an idea.

Last winter I spotted my wife’s old fleece slippers in the trash

I now have a lifetime supply of fly patches

Hardware stores carry self-adhesive squares of velcro. You can stick the fuzzy half wherever you want on the vest. The adhesive seems to be permanent.

Velcro holds barbless hooks better than fleece. Barbed hooks stick so well that it takes some force to get them back out.

I have forgotten the name of the company, but I have a patch made out magnets. It is held in place by a piece of steel behind the vest to which the magnets on the outside of the vest adhere. The magnets grab and hold the hooks. It is the best fly patch I’ve ever used and I’ve used a bunch.

I think I’ll just stick them back in the foam and see how they dry, and if that doesn’t work I have a bunch of other ideas now.

Thanks.

They ain’t cheap but all you need to do is lose about 10 flies off of a fleece or foam patch, (VERY easy to do) to justify the cost:

Fly Trap

I have been using one for years and they are fantastic with no hook rusting!

Ive heard a lot of great things about those fly traps. I know what you mean about losing flies, every trip a few of mine dissappear off the patch.

I actually use this. FREE TOO!

That’s a really cool idea, I’m gonna make one tonight if I can find something to use as a screen.

It occurs to me that one could make multiple perforations with a drill and not have to use a screen.
It also occurs to me that in this day and age of digital photography those cannisters are getting scarce…but in this day and age of multiple medications pill bottles are becoming more available and should work.:frowning:

I use a 4"X4" square cut from an old mouse pad w/safety pinned to my vest…watch for me. Can’t miss me…works good.
