Hi,
Although commissioning artwork won’t happen often with my budget, I can’t help but admire artists for the moments they capture. I’m guessing the favorites vary somewhat with the region. Any favorites out there?

Hi Kathy,
My latest purchase were two pieces by Vaughn Cochran - one of bonefish and the other of a tarpon daisy chain. I met Vaugh in the crowded tiny airport in Abacos, Bahamas. Just started talking and trading stories. It turns out he was a Key West fly fishing guide and also played in Jimmy Buffet’s band. Being a musician myself and an over-zealous fly fisherman also, we had a lot to share. Here’s a link to his studio website.

Hi Kathy,
My contemporary favorites are Dave Footer and John Swan. Older stuff includes Louis Rhead and H.A. Driscole. By the way, MITW/BOTB is a great read - thanks! Alec

I like Chet Reneson a lot. I have his print “June Trout” hanging in my living room. Years ago he did one called “The Match Makers” that is probably my all-time favorite.

I like Dan Rickards stuff. I have one of his prints in my living room. I wish he would update his site with bigger pictures. It’s hard to see how beautiful his art is.

I have a few peice of wall art, that hang on the walls of my den. Each has a memory that is attached to the picture.
The first piece, I bought when in Hill City, South Dakota. Bought it at the art studio that is run by the artist, who is also a fly angler. The 7" x 10" picture is a limited print, of a watercolor, titled “BLACK HILLS BROOKIES”. It reminds of the the streams and scenery of the 1999 FAOL Fish-In that was hosted by Al Campbell.
The 2nd piece is a very large limited print of two fly anglers in a drift boat, the peice is titled “SMOKEY MORNING”. It is one of those pictures you can just look at and be drawn into the picture, and your mind starts wandering, about what is around the next bend, and what the fish might be biting on that day. It is a very peaceful peice.
The 3rd piece is a piece by Les C Kouba, that is titled “Trout for Breakfast”, this one was given to me as a gift by a friend. From the scenery in the picture, it reminds me of the Trout Streams of Northern Minnesota in and around the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness.
The 4th piece is a Carrie G. Stevens Rangley pattern, “Kelly’s Killer”, that was tied by Richard Connors (quillg). I have it framed and sitting on my desktop.
This is a picture of the fly quillg tied…

Monte Dolack, a Montana artist, has many pieces that could be posted here. One of my favorites is titled Rock Creek.

The person who I would LOVE to have something done by is located at: http://www.ratfish.com/[/url:c0279] I was all set up to get some of the cards she had a couple of years ago, but they sold out.

While he’s not specifically a fly fishing artist I saw this fellow’s work at the Florida State Fair last year. It is much more beautiful in person than what the net can show. He also puts hidden animals in each picture that are fun to look for.
Try www.fish-prints.com[/url:8d21a] and see if this helps.

He’s a great innovative fly tyer, but you may not know that Dave Whitlock is also a fantastic illustrator. He usually does all the work in his instructional books.
I met Dave Whitlock, when he was at Berkley’s Fly Shop, in Eden Prairie MN. I had Dave’s Book “Guide to Aquatic Trout Food”, with me hoping he would sign the book.
Dave wrote the following inside the book cover…

I’ve enjoyed our visit! Hope this book and my presentations help you enjoy flyfishing more!

He also drew a character of a Trout swimming along a stream bed, all with a black felt-tip pen.

Don,
Kat had a bunch of cards reprinted last year so she may have what you want now.

JME,
“Pike in the Roots” is awesome!
I like the pike in the roots picture too. He seems to be smiling with trophies of the battles won displayed around his lair.
I have a few of his prints and would love to own an original piece.

and on that note, I took up cross-stitch as a cabin fever / lazy eye exercise. You can create your own with your own photos easily enough.
Oh yes, when I dont paint my own I like to check out Georgies, http://www.fish-paintings.co.nz/[/url:1cc87]

You’ll fine him at Whitefish Studio - www.whitefishstudio.com.[/url:c4738] While you’re there be sure to sign up for his Thursday Morning Art Review. Always an interesting piece of his art acompanied by a related story.

Having worked as an artist at one time, I’ve collected much too much. But I will 2nd the comment on Monty Dolack, we have his Yellowstone River hanging here in the office.
