Elkhorn rods

Does anyone have experience with the Elkhorn bamboos or the western series rods? Might decide to purchase one or the other,or both. Thanks and God Bless! John 3:16

Just gave a new one away!

do you care where it is manufactured?
note that I did not say assembled.

      1.

I’ll bite. Though I suspect that the components come from many countries and nearby planets, I do not know for sure. In your words,“Where is it manufactured?”

ASIAN?!

Hi John 3:16 - I have a Western series, 9ft 5 wt. It is a rod I keep in my pick-up all year long. Here in S.E. Michigan I am mostly after pan fish. A very well made, medium action rod that can easily cast a clouser if needed. I mate it up with a South Bend Click & Pawl reel with silk line or a 1494 with 444 line. The rod case is an exceptional piece of work. I spoke to the factory and asked about the origion of the rod. According to them, all compenents are from Korea and everything is assembled in the USA. Very good looking and nicely put together rod (IMO) This is also a rod I have never hesitated to let a newbie handle with the 444 line. I didn’t get to fish as much in 06 as I wanted, I hope next year will be different. Good luck, Jonezee

Search the archives for elkhorn bamboo. There are a several threads about them. I have one that I like as do others. I think it is a good value. No its not a $4,000 rod, but you ain’t payin’ $4,000 for it either.

I found an Elkhorn bamboo rod leaning against a tree at the MI fish in…No one was looking so took it.

just to cast of course.

Sweet little rod. A 7 1/2’ 4 or 5 wt as I recall.
I later found out it belonged to Jack Hise.

Jerry it is a 5 wt, Cortland Sylk line and G Loomis reel. And, yes it is a sweet rod.

Jonezee, out of curiousity, I went to the Elkhorn site
http://www.elkhornflyrodandreel.com/flyrods/bamboo.cfm
It says the rod is built in the province of Tonkin China, by master craftsmen. So which is it? :?:

I e-mailed them back when the bamboo came out and I was told they were made in China also. 8)

So which is it? Question Shocked

Perhaps the cane and the graphite are grown in different countries.

HUH :?:

I hate that we are loosing so many graphite fields because of an endangered toad :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

Is it hard to understand that graphite rods may be from one country and the cane rods from a different one? Is this really beyond the grasp? Let me guess. You are a natural blond?

Ralph the Janitor. The Western Series is Graphite, not bamboo. Maybe something has changed, but I was told the graphite components are all Korean? I am sure you are correct about the Bamboo. J.C. the last time I went to get a drivers license, I wrote down hair color “brown” The young lady behind the counter said Mr. Jonezee your hair is now gray and besides that what little is left makes you bald. Well pop my ballon,I am gray and bald. Jonezee

I would suggest to all to visit the Sponsor page here on FAOL and check out the Elkhorn website. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Jonezee, my humblest of apologies. The bamboo’s are built in China, and you’re most likely correct as to where the graphite rod are built/made/produced.
My younger brother had bought a 3w (I think it was the Western series too) at a fly show about 5 or 6 years ago along with the reel. Paid a decent price for it and he liked it a lot. It broke right above the grip. He got it replaced, broke it again. He got married, moved and can’t find the pieces. He’s now been moaning for 2 years now.

Grown? So where do I find a graphite bush. Or is it a tree.

And you’re calling someone else a blonde?

lol, Hey Jonezee, ‘twer not youz I was referin’ ter.
