…take protective measures if you must be outdoors from Montana to the east coast Thursday through Monday. Pay particular attention in the northern plains and Canada. Folks we are talking about temps and wind chills that kill!
Here is a link from Accuweather in State College Pennsylvania:
These folks are very accurate with their forecasts. I do not normally go in for the fear mongering type of hype but this is nothing to fool around with. With the temps and chill factors they are calling for it will get very dangerous for those of us who must venture out of doors over the weekend.
There is a lot of buzz about this winter rivaling that of 1977-1978. Those of us who lived through that one know how cold and snowy it was. I spent a lot of days sled riding and snowmobiling when I should have been in school back then!
Last Saturday I woke up to -17 with a windchill of -30 to -40. Today it’s a balmy +13 which is the warmest it’s been in a week. We are expecting another 5" - 9" of snow with a forcasted high on Friday of -2 and a low -10. Not sure what the windchill will be. We have had sub zero temps here (Des Moines IA) for the past week.
The thermo meter out back says +20 now. I don’t think it is going to hit the 28 degree mark Acuweather is predicting. It’s snowing lightly. We are not supposed to get more than an inch or 3. We’ll see.
Nothing wrong with a good 'pout !! Going to go stare at a hole in the floor for a couple days next week myownself. It’s been -30 and worse around here lately and even those of us that got to work in it ain’t all that happy. yeh, you kind of get used to it, but you don’t really learn to like it ! ( But we don’t tell the folks down South that, we just tell them we’re tough !)
I’m not going to argue about you being tough, you can laugh at me in July. But North GA isn’t too bad year around, I worked my way through college doing road construction in New Orleans area and made several annual training session at Camp Shelby in South MS. I know hot and humidity and I will take it over below zero anyday.
If I get a chance I will try to visit MN in the summer and help boost the economy, you can come to GA in cool weather and do the same…
I loved my first winter in Montana. A week of -40 at night. Amazing numbers of people who had migrated to Montana from warmer places packed up and went home.
I recommend widespread panic and hoarding of all supplies. Seems to be what the TV would have you do. As if people had never had winter before.
32.1 here this morning with about the same temperature expected tomorrow morning; then again next Sunday & Monday mornings. The frost stoppped about 6 feet from the house all around the foundation even though the roof shingles were covered ! Might get back to the 70’s by next Wednesday after days of the temperature not getting to 60 ! The citrus trees haven’t been frosted yet like last year, so might not lose too much, but the inland areas with freeze warnings are going to send citrus & vegetables prices up from these crop killing iceings. It was so much easier to just 4 wheel out of 2 feet of new powder snow living up at 8000 feet in the Rockies !
For those not used to this stuff - take it easy folks.
Although we may snicker, giggle, tee-hee and chuckle about your woe’s (when we’re more than used to that stuff, and bbq in shorts in Jan and Feb) - for those that are not used to it and are unaware of the cold elements, it is dangerous - please take necessary precautions.
Growing up in Wyoming We had a week each winter where the temp never got above 0. The first couple of years back in Colorado were the same, but I haven’t seen that for a long time. Even this cold snap won’t get there for us.
Wish we would get one of those below zero snaps for two weeks, maybe we could kill off a few pine beetles. Just another normal winter here in southwest Wyoming where the wind lives most of the year.
Oh yea, have to get out the next layer of clothing.
