Bobbin For silk threads

I’ve recently decided to try my hand tying wet flies using silk threads , I’m sure there are some tyers here that use silk threads, and wanted to find out what bobbin(s) type are best suited for these small silk thread spools, i.e. Gossamer Silks.

Thanks,

Mike

i use the Wasatch ceramic, with the nice wood on the bobbin. They are really nice trouble free bobbins. Good karma for good silk flies.

In all honesty, all personal pref aside. Any CERAMIC bobbins will work. The key is to find one that feels good and you can control.

Thanks for the info, appreciate it. I got a bunch of ceramic bobbins but was concerned about the spools size. I going to be ordering some silk thread but wanted to make sure the bobbins I have will hold the spools properly. I haven’t used silk threads before, the Gossamer silks, so I don’t have any spools to judge by.

Mike

This Matarelli bobbin is specifically designed for use with Pearsalls Gossamer Silk…it’s also owning a piece of history, when Frank passes, there will be no more…

These were made special. Work great.

I have been tying with only silk for all flies, drys & softhackle for several years now.
I use silk from this vendor, Roserushbrooke, 200 meter spools, standard size that fit in any regular size bobbin

I use the Rite Bobbin for tying and thread tension for rod wrapping.

I am a dealer for Pearsalls Gossamer Silk but prefer to use the YLI (URL above). 200 meters per spool vs 45 meters.
Another advantage of the YLI are all the colors one can obtain.
Size for YLI measures just a bit smaller than 8/0. Of course all my rite bobbins are ceramic.

Should you have any questions, e-mail me.

Thanks Denny those Roserushbrooke, 200 meter spools are nice a what a selection of colors! Not more then the standard 45m spools too. I already have 2 of the Rite Bobbins myself so I know how good those are, luv the new half hitch bobbin they came out with.

I’m new to silk threads so I want to start out simple for right now and see how it goes.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike,

I’ll just add another vote for the YLI 100 silk. I think it’s easier to split than Pearsall’s since it has one less ply to it. Their Wine Red #228 is as close as you’ll ever get to Pearsall’s infamous crimson #13 that’s called for in quite a few classic patterns including some of Leisenrings. It’s the only old Pearsall’s color that’s still not available as the other colors are now. I bought mine from Red Rocks thread on line.

Regards,
Mark

add another vote for me as well for the yli 100 silk its great for flies, leaders and rod wraping as well.

I have a Matarelli too, and love it with my silks. They are a bit pricey though, but worth the money if you use a lot of silk.

Those YLI silk threads seem the way to go for sure, much better deal price wise, compared to the std., 45m spools. Now I just need to decide which colors to start with. I did notice they also offer assortment kits too.
