Very cool picture for this thread.
Glad to be part of this forum! Is anyone up for a chat about fly fishing flies? I’m curious on where do you usually buy your flies, materials, and gear? Seems like more and more shops are popping up online these days.
Hi Allison. For some reason this doesn’t appear in the list of recent posts. I’m hoping this reply will move it onto it.
I can share were I get things…but it’d help to know that kind of fly fishing you like to do.
I fish for bass, pike and muskies far more than trout, and that may not help you if you’re interested in trout…
I’m mostly into trout fishing, but I’m always curious about bass and pike flies too. Where do you usually source yours?
MY last two orders have been from the Flytyersdungeon.com.
I am mainly trying to use up what I have.
Rick
These days, I tie most of my own bass, pike and musky flies.
Good sources for flies for all three are Lund’s Fly Shop and Musky Fool. Both are great sources for tying materials as well.
FTD is a good source for alot of materials - I have an order inbound from them right now.
Slight correction on that link though: Fly Tyers Dungeon
Thanks for sharing, Rick. I checked them out and they seem to have some quality materials. I’ll reach out to them.
I’ve been looking to learn tying myself, so it’s encouraging to hear you do most of your own. I checked out Lund’s and they seem to have been in business a long time with lots of positive reviews online.
My work got me traveling a lot so it’s tough to set aside the time. I only got into fly fishing recently because I really enjoy being around the water, it just gives me a calm break from everything.
When I was in the UK, a buddy told me he sometimes buys flies from overseas. His point was that as a beginner, instead of paying premium shop prices, you can grab a whole dozen for the price of one. That got me curious, so I started looking online. I saw some people on Reddit talking about cheap flies options and I came across aquinaflies. The site looks decent and the flies look well put together, but I haven’t ordered yet.
Anyone here tried getting flies from overseas sellers before? How was your experience?
Sierra Trading Post often has flies in lots of a dozen, or a half dozen at steep discounts.
I just checked them out and they really do seem to have a wide variety with a lot of the popular patterns.
If you’re new to tying, don’t forget the craft stores. Hobby lobby has things like pheasant and guinea feathers as well as foam and markers.
Most of the flies these days are made in Thailand or Kenya. BigYFly company etc. unless they say tied in the USA thats where they’re made. That’s the only way they can be sold for under a dollar each.
You certainly won’t save money tying your own, at least compared to overseas prices. They buy hooks by the 10000 units, and they tied thousands of dozens a month. But it is a fun hobby, and you can make beer money by selling a few.
Hi Allison! I’d love to chat at a time that’s good for us. Early evening is the usually the best for me.
Hi, early evening works well for me too. What day this week would be most convenient for you?
