When fishing from a free drifting boat or even with a drogue distance does improve the catch rate. I've fished almost exclusively this way for 24 or 25 years and nymphing, wet fly or lures, especially when down deep, benefit from far off casting. Accuracy isn't a problem up to 30 odd yards. Where distance doesn't matter is when the fish are on the top, either dry fly or nymph/wets. Bank fishing also of course is aided at times by long casting, particularly where the fish are spooked.
