Not that I NEED it but I was wondering where to look for a fighting butt for my 5wt rod. I plan to use it to fish the surf.
Thanks

I've made them from a piece of rod blank and a fancy bottle cork

Hello Martin McFly, you should be able to find a fighting butt where you bought your reel seat. Also, Struble has them and is a sponsor here.

I have been checking around and I liked the ones that you screw to your rod but can you remove the cap at the bottom of the rod and insert (do I have to glue it) the female section?

I think so MM, but i'd like to see a pic of the end of the reelseat to be sure. If (usually is) it's a piece that is glued into the back of the seat that doesn't have a reelfoot slot, you're ok and you can remove the plug, measure for a fighting butt that is either o-ringed so you can take it off if you want to or one that you epoxy in. Hope this helps !
Edit: Be aware that when you remove the plug if that's what the seat has, that you may likely encounter the very butt end of the rod blank. If so, additional work would be required to install a fighting butt.

Unless you have a reel seat that was made for one, most fighting butts need to be installed when the rod is built. Retro-fitting a rod not desigend for one may be risking ruining the rod. Like MontanaMoose said the butt end of the rod blank is likely to be just inside the but cap.
Sounds like a good excues for new rod/rod project! If you runin your 5wt, trying to make a fighting butt fit, you'll have to replace the rod right? So logic dictates that buying or build a new one first will still cost the same, but you now have TWO rods!
If you have an uplocking reel seat its easy to slip a rubber butt cap over it for a removeable FB.I did that for years on an 8wt that I built.I got a Daisy butt cap, sort of looked like a crutch tip,and slipped it ovet the end of the rod.Just kept it in my pocket until I needed it and then took it off.You really dont want to try to retro fit a rod for a FB.
