Since trout eat 90% subsurface, you will want to concentrate on those type of flies. I have concentrated on woolly buggers since I have found they work for me most of the time under all conditions.

Local libraries usually have several fly tying books so you don't need to buy a lot of books. And, there are many videos available on-line on just about every type of fly or fly tying technique.
