Hackle Method

Hey all,

A couple years ago I had a magazine that showd how to tie dries with a hackle that was wrapped around tippet and folded over the thorax. I tied a bunch of them and loved them. Well, I am out of them now and can't find the magazine, remember how to do it, or even remember what the method was called to look it up. Any help would be great.

The style of fly you are refering to was desribed in a Flytyer Mag article as the 'paraloop emerger' I have also seen is called 'hackle stacker'.

The general method is to tie in a 6" loop of tipper material in a wing post position. The end of the loop is clipped into a 'gallows tool' to hold it vertical above the hook. Hackle is tied in and wrapped parachute style over the tippet loop post, wraping 3-4 turns up the post then 3-4 turns down the post and tied off.

The end of the loop is detached from the gallows tool and bent down over a thorax of dubbing and tied off at the head.

My gallows tool is a piece of heavy wire coat hanger with a hook bent into the end. I attach it to my vice stand and adjust it to place the hook about 8" above the fly. A rubber band and some hackle pliers are suspended fron the hook.
