Ham, egg and potato notwithstanding, I see my thread is hijacked. I will proceed straightaway to my basement window and jump. However, before I "go", is it my imagination as to SPAM being a component of any of the rations heretofore cited?. I seem to vividly recall an olive drab can ( round or rectangular) labeled "Luncheon Meat- Pork "( other ingredients a mystery) etc. I submit that it could have been during my family's immigration aboard an American troop carrier SS General Black ( 1949). AS a child I recall the troops handing out candy, cookies ( REAL butter cookies), and other things to our parents. Perhaps it was then that I tasted this delicacy which remains in my culinary memory till today.

PS: Since I do "recall" the label and ingredients, perhaps it in fact WAS in one of the rations I had in ARMY. (??)

And actually, I apologize for the "hijacked" implication ( and I was SOOOO close to the basement window). I see that I MYSELF inserted a military comment in an addition to my original post. So , in any case, NEVER MIND!

The good news Marco is Spam is still around and doing well. But, those of us once removed from WWII certainly heard about Spam from our relatives who serviced. According to Wikipedia there was 150 million pounds purchased by the military. The amount consumed or at least purchased past 7 billion pounds in 2007, that is a lot of canned meat.

Your recall of the olive drab can and the contents are correct .... and it was a round can. Believe me, I know, I remember.

    Marco,
I am probably one of the "hijackers". Certainly want to apologize and offer to remove my posts so this thread stays right on point.

    Marco,
I was once scolded by an administrator because someone thought I had hijacked his thread. So, I don't assume a comment about hijacking is in jest. Good to know you're understanding, though.

Every time I go shopping I pass the Spam, I always think about picking up a can but never do.
It's something you can keep on the shelf and still eat if the electric goes off and other food spoils.
Has any military people seen C ration cans that have split open? We had them stock piled on our Nike site for emergencies.
Being snowed in for three day wasn't considered a emergency so we got our butt chewed for eating some.
