Thread: Weirdest thing?

    Default Weirdest thing?

I know folks here have talked about the strangest things they've caught while flyfishing. I recall reading at least one person who caught a bat!

Last night while flyfishing, I somehow managed to lasso this Cliff Swallow with my tippet during a backcast. The line was looped around his neck...at some point later, his wing also caught on the line. He took it all in stride, and flew away just fine after I untangled him.

Anybody else catch anything bizarre so far this year?

I think the one that stands out in my mind the most is a Kingfisher that actually dived down and took my floating minnow pattern. I was so surprised that I stood there as he flew off, until he ran out of slack line/leader. Thankfully it just snatched the fly/lure out of its mouth and it continued on its way. I've also caught a snapping turtle, and a couple of water snakes.

While vacationing in Florida this past winter, I hooked a danged Pelican that actually took my fly (A big clouser) in mid-cast as it flew by. It drew more attention than I wanted...but I got it released with a struggle.

Rick...I trust you were gentle on the release?

James, that kingfisher encounter sounds pretty cool! Maybe we need to start "Life Lists" of bird species caught while fishing? ;o) I've also caught a seagull, and had an osprey on the line for a minute or so...and barely managed to keep my fly/lure away from pelicans, loons, ducks and herons. For other animal species...muskrats, turtles, snakes, frogs, crayfish, clams...but never landed the beaver.

And don't even get us started on Plant Species hooked!

NJ...I bet that pelican didn't come in quietly! oh man!

Not this year but during the many years I have been using the fly rod- A Bat, sea gull, cormorant, frogs, snakes, an alligator that came up and took a popping bug, and every now and then-a fish.

I WISH I could say, "I fly-cast with such tight loops, I can lasso a bird out of the air on my backcast!" And I did. But I don't.

I've landed several rocks up to about fist-size. I don't see other people doing this, so I assume it's just a talent...
