    Default NYC Central Park Crappie

    Hi All,

I have a question about the Crappie in the Harlem Meer. the swim around and stop, then they just tip forward face toward the floor and pop bubbles. What are they doing?

    Thanks...

Yes Central Park folks...for those that dont know...Large Mouth Bass, Crappie, Sunnies, Bluegills, Huge Carp, Catfish. catch and release of course.

I've fished the Meer, the pool at 103rd street and the lake at 72nd street but have never witness that behavior from crappie. In fact I have fished all of the lakes in the NYC dept of parks system(12 lakes) and have only seen carp release bubbles.

Why do I feel juvenile for saying this? ;o) Well...fish DO "toot". I've watched fish do this in my aquariums.
It also occurs to me that as they tip their heads down, perhaps they are releasing a bit of air from their air bladders in order to make it easier to gain depth?

    Maybe they have gas?
Actually my best guess is they are adjusting their air bladders. While watching the DNR release some trout I saw some come to the top for no apparent reason. A DNR person said they were adjusting their air bladders.
